Has anyone come any AU fanfics where a fantasy canon is revealed to have secretly been scifi in setting, or vice versa? While I tend to find the trope rather annoying in most canons, thinking about that secret made me realize that I'd actually be interested in seeing it implemented in fic.

Alternately, what canons do you think would be particularly fun to see given this twist?

I had never heard of that premise, actually. What canons has it shown up in?

On reflection, I don't think I've ever seen the 'oops, it was actually magic' variation done that often- I think Christopher Stasheff's Warlock series might have flip-flopped back and forth a few times, but I haven't read those books since middle school so I'm kind of hazy on the details.

On the 'oops, actually science' side, there are a lot of works which try to explain away supernatural or psychic phenomena (heck, even within scifi you sometimes get attempts to make things 'more scientific'- Star Wars' midichlorians, for example), but the most egregious I've seen was probably Unicorn Jelly.

The Dragonriders of Pern comes to mind, for fantasy-is-really-SF.

The first thing that comes to mind for me that does the 'fantasy but really sci-fi' is the anime Scrapped Princess, which actually does a pretty interesting job of it. The characters appear to be living in a medieval-ish fantasy world that's eventually revealed to have come about in the aftermath of humanity losing an intergalactic war.

That reminds me of a semi-recent pirate episode from Doctor Who. The pirates (as well as Amy and Rory) thought they were under attack by a siren-ghost. It turned out to be a semi-malfunctioning medical hologram of a space vessel. (I think it was a Tennant ep, but don't quote me on that.)

That was the Matt Smith episode "The Curse of the Black Spot", season 6 episode 3 (according to wikipedia)

So, something similar to "Running Out of Time" by Margaret Peterson Haddix, but with fantasy/sci-fi instead of 1840's/1996? Because that would be cool and I would like to see a remake of the book with that I mean what, but I've never read it myself. :(

Sharon Shin's Samaria novels are like that- you think they're fantasy, with angels and their singing influencing the weather, but there must be reason it was published by a SF imprint... ;)

Ooh, I actually wrote a fic like that! Zelda/Star Trek crossover - the 'Goddesses' were incredibly intelligent, advanced beings of some sort, and the Triforce is actually a supercomputer with a telepathic interface and the ability to sort of warp reality. Basically, the Goddesses are Q, and it uses and abuses Clarke's third law.

The inhabitants of Hyrule discover this rather rudely then the Triforce's 'magic' alerts a hostile alien force and starts converting people into cyborgs, causing Voyager (who's been pursuing them) to intervene.

Poor Zelda has a rather rude shock when she learns about it. Yay crises of faith. (Neelix talks to her about it, about his own experiences with having his faith shattered. It does help.)
