It's not the saddest song I've ever heard, but aside from that I agree with you. And most people seem to be under the impression that it's a happy song!

I hated Jackie Paper throughout my childhood.

[personal profile] gamma_orionis 2013-06-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this completely! I'm not one to cry easily, but this song makes me cry every time. Not just a little teary-eyed, either - like, tears running down my face, uncontrollable sobbing.

I kind of wish that song could still get me like it did when I was a kid. It doesn't make me as sad now but it used to make me wanna bawl.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda liked the song as a kid, and then one day it just hit me what it's really about. I still liked it (the melody is neat), but damn, it's made me sad to hear it from then on.

I hate that song so much. I mean, it's sad, but it's also sad in a way that I find infuriating to listen to. It's just so completely stuffy and boring and mind-numbing and awful.

oh god yes. And now that I end up singing it/reading the book to kids frequently it's like having my heart stomped on over and over

also, I remember asking my mom what was wrong with Jackie Paper in the animated movie and she said that he was depressed, which is a kind of sickness where you are sad and can't get happy and I was TERRIFIED of it after that :P

My brother really liked this song. He took his life when I was just a kid, so it always makes me cry when I hear it.

Oh god yes, this song is still one of those things that makes me turn into an ugly mess of tears. I don't know why we were taught it as a 'happy' song in year three because even 8 year old me knew that it wasn't happy.

Still makes me cry every time, too. I don't think I really got the song before I saw the animated movie, but once I did...

This song completely devastated me when I was a kid, when I figured out what it meant. I still can't stand to listen to it (not that I have to - it's imprinted in my brain permanently).

There was also that time my sister brought up the fact that it reminded her of Calvin and Hobbes, which made it a hundred times worse :(

As far as I can remember, I first heard this song at a weird puppet show at the fair, that was basically the plot of Urashimataro, so I can't listen to the song without being weirded out, and assuming that Jackie Paper left because he accidentally opened the box that made him too old to believe in Puff, and not because he stopped naturally.

What song really gets me, though, is One Tin Soldier. D:

It *is* a sad song though, OP! Why people think it's okay for *small* children is something I'll never understand. :/

Also, intentionally or not I'm going to assume this is a Peter, Paul and Mary secret and squee accordingly.

That song broken my heart as a kid, and it still does now.

I'm not sure if this makes it better, but there is a version of the song I heard a few years ago with an extra verse added to the end where the daughter of Jackie Paper finds Puff.

I always thought this too and was so confused with everyone when I was little who sang it with such joy. I think we sang it for a show in elementary. I just- why with such joy?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This was always the last song of the night the counselor with the guitar would play at my summer camp's campfires. Good night, enjoy your tears about a sad dragon whose friend went away!

What's so sad about it? I mean, it's not full of happy joy, but it's... not that sad, either.

Wow. Okay, I didn't expect people to hate this song. I personally love this song precisely because it's melancholy. It's about growing up from the point of an imaginary friend. It's sweet.

Well, Puff doesn't really hit me that way - but I know what you mean OP. Taps always makes me cry - mostly because it's played at military funerals.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2013-06-12 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
If someone plays that song, I will leave the room. I just can't take it, and haven't been able to since I was a kid and first heard it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
A folk artist got permission to record this song with a final verse, which he wrote because it depressed him too. You might like it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAIarr1l5yg

I've always thought it was a very sad song, but I've always loved it too. When I was a little girl, in the summer my dad worked very long hours and was often up and gone from the house hours before I'd get up for the day and not home until well after I'd gone to bed. He used to call a local radio station and request this song for me every day. It's one of my happiest memories, and the song has never made me cry, but it is terribly sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of a sad song, but since I know the story ends happily from the cartoon, it doesn't make me that sad.
