baby you better have a link because I refuse to believe there's such a thing as "good Hannibal fic" until I see it.

You know what I hate?

I hate when assholes act like they're so much better than other fans because they were into the thing for longer. You know what? A person can be a fan of The Avengers if they've only seen the movies and read none of the comics, and even if the movies don't inspire them to read the comics, they're still fans. A person can be a fan of Sherlock Holmes if they've only watched the BBC show or the new movies or Elementary, and even if those shows don't inspire them to read the books or watch Granada, they're still fans. A person can be a fan of The Wanted even if they've only ever heard two songs from them, and even if those two songs don't inspire them to go out and seek the rest of their discography, they're still fans!

Sorry about the teal deer; fan elitism frustrates me to no end.

I totally agree with everything you wrote here. Fan elitism bugs me so much. If you like something and want to be considered a fan, you're a fan.

Agreed -- especially when one show/movie/series/etc. takes place within an entirely different fictional universe with no connection to any of the others. The MCU Avengers are not the 616 Avengers, and BBC Sherlock and Elementary are not ACD!Holmes. You can be a fan of one without being interested in the other, and it won't hurt your characterization any (in fact, it might help it, since you're not experiencing negative transfer. Sometimes I wonder if some Avengers fanauthors have read too much Ultimates and gotten their Steves confused).

And you know what I hate?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
A person can be a fan of Sherlock Holmes if they've only watched the BBC show or the new movies or Elementary, and even if those shows don't inspire them to read the books or watch Granada, they're still fans.

Fans of the shows, sure. Fans of 'Sherlock Holmes' when the shows/films are really not very much like the source material? Actually, no. If it's elitist to point that out, then I am and I don't care. It has nothing to do with "length of time" one has been in a fandom. It has everything to do with derivations being so far from the original they have pretty much just pinched the idea or the names and run with it - which they can do, sure but you might as well say that a fan of The Lion King is a Shakespeare enthusiast. Exaggeration for effect.

Fan handwaving and "ooh, anyone who disagrees something is canon is an elitist" frustrates me to no end.

I agree with everything except that I don't think you can be a fan of a band/musician when you don't feel bothered listening to more than two songs. Clearly it means you like those songs but you don't care about anything else but those songs, so you can't actually be a fan of the band/musician as a whole. You're not a fan of Sherlock Holmes if you have only ever watched one episode of the show either.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I don't even bother remembering a band/musician's name unless I like more than one or two of their songs. Usually I decide I'm a fan by accident when I go through my music and realize that I have multiple songs by the same people... then I go looking for more. :)

I'd venture to say most of the fandom is in the same boat you are, and if you've managed to capture the characters as they appear in this particular version of the story which all the fans of Hannibal are fans of....congratulations, you've succeeded!

(Although, uh, links, please? I have yet to see any fic in this fandom that nails the characters as they appear in Hannibal or any other iteration of the story. So much glossing over shit and woobification going on, it's such a disappointment.)
deadtree: (Default)

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-06-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah agreed. I'm also a fan of the show who hasn't ever read/seen any of the other media. I wouldn't know if Hannibal is in character for the books or not; and I wouldn't care. I'm interested in the iterations we have on the current show.

But I also agree on the second point, I gave up on Hannibal fanfic because I haven't seen any that was ever in character. Unless it's like a really quick oneshot smutfic or something... I've been known to indulge in those regardless of accurate characterization >_>

Not the OP, but I think pretty highly of this one:

Bad people in a bad set of relationships, but recognizably that particular set of bad people. Or so I thought, and I hate Hannibal schmoop with a burning passion.

Wow, that was....exactly what I've been waiting for, and hadn't known it until now. Holy god.

e: WAIT I'M NOT DONE -- that was seriously one of the best pieces of fic I've ever read. BLESS YOU FOR RECCING IT

ikr

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
But there's no reason you should have read the books or seen the movies. Furthermore, your characterization might have been worse if you had. Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal Lecter is nothing like Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter, nor are the other characters from the show all that much like their previous incarnations. Now that you've started lying you probably can't go back, but you never needed to for cred.

Pretty much this. If it's IC for the TV series, then it's IC. The series isn't the movies isn't the books.

You win everything! Well, maybe not the karma, but everything else.

I've seen some of the movies/read some of the books (I haven't seen Red Dragon, hilariously enough, and I never finished that book) but the show is definitely different enough that I definitely don't think you would need to in order to write fic.

That said, Silence of the Lambs, both book and movie, is awesome and I would recommend checking them out to anyone who liked the show. The others, eh, not so much.

[personal profile] exova 2013-06-12 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's not too surprising - I think of the show as very separate from the books and movies, since it's already deviated from the source material in several respects and Mikkelsen approaches Lecter in his own way rather than emulating Hopkins. It's not like you need to have read the books or watched the movies to understand or appreciate the show, although it's fun to catch the references!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
The characterizations in the books are nothing like the TV show. It doesn't matter and is unimportant when you're writing fic for the show. Hannibal is in a completely different place in the books than he is in the series, and the Ed Norton portrayal of Will Graham is closer to the book characterization than Hugh Dancy.

The series really has its own take on things, so you can stop lying about that. It doesn't win you any points.

......I'm sorry OP, but I'm gonna side eye that now and say it most likely isn't. But unless you post a link, I'll never know.

But seriously, I really can't with this new Hannibal fandom. Ugh.
