Request For Jogging Tips

[personal profile] seiskink 2013-06-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi all,

I want to start jogging on a regular basis on the treadmill at the neighbourhood gym. Unfortunately, my ankles hurt when I jog as I am flat-footed. Does anyone have a similar problem or know of a way to alleviate the pain?

Probably different shoes.

Sorry, all I can think of after reading the phrase 'flat-footed' is that you're a guaranteed sneak-attack target.

This is not helpful in the slightest.

I had this problem and my doctor said it was shin splints. I never really understood exactly what shin splints are or why they hurt my ankles and what being flat footed had to do with it. Switching shoes helped me for a long time but eventually I had to give up jogging and use an elliptical trainer, instead. New Balance makes running shoes specifically for people with flat feet and someone told me Brooks does, too, but I'm not sure since I stopped looking into them when I saw the price.

Shin splints are usually pain in your shins from ankle to knee. As someone with shortened hamstring muscles (I walk on my toes constantly, and did as a child too) I get shin splints if I'm wearing sneakers or flat shoes at work, as opposed to heals, because my legs are stressed.

I've never heard of shin splints being a direct cause of ankle pain before though. :/

OP, do you wear orthotics at all? My feet used to be badly pronated (caused me to blow out one knee at sixteen because it put all my joints out of whack), but years of arched orthotics forced my feet to arch properly. If you're running flat-footed without any arch support, that might be putting too much stress on your ankles, because the angle at which your feet are hitting the ground could be wrong?

Go to a running store in your area. They'll help you get proper running shoes.

something where the arc-part of the sole is raised above the rest should help?

/not a professional, ask someone who really knows their stuff!

Honestly, if you're going to do it on a regular basis you should invest in a good pairing of running shoes - ones that are the right type for your foot*. Having the wrong type of shoe can cause pain and make you more prone to injury.

*There are different types for different types of feet.

I'd really recommend doing something that's not jogging - consistently slamming 100+ lbs of force on your legs is pretty shit for your joints if you're not used to it. I'd go with a stationary bike or elliptical instead, since you're going to the gym anyway; it's a similar workout for your body without the added trauma to your joints.

If you're insistent about jogging, though, you're going to need arch supports and a quality pair of running shoes. You may also want to look into soft ankle and knee braces, too. If it's at all possible, see if you can talk to a physical therapist (or hell, even a yoga or Pilates instructor) to learn what you need to do to correct how you stand/walk - being flat-footed means you're likely to have a tendency to put your weight on the middle or inner soles of your feet, which in turn will pull your ankles, knees, and hips out of proper alignment. Trying to run like that is going to do more harm than good. Once you're outfitted with what you need, you'll probably want to start off with walking properly to build up the muscles you weren't using properly before. When that starts feeling more natural, then you can start running.
