I've never heard of shin splints being a direct cause of ankle pain before though. :/
OP, do you wear orthotics at all? My feet used to be badly pronated (caused me to blow out one knee at sixteen because it put all my joints out of whack), but years of arched orthotics forced my feet to arch properly. If you're running flat-footed without any arch support, that might be putting too much stress on your ankles, because the angle at which your feet are hitting the ground could be wrong?
