It might be because there's an incredibly thin line between Patriotism and Nationalism. I'm American and have had to deal with the latter so often that I don't even think most Americans can tell the difference. Nationalism is quite gross.

But this is coming from someone who thinks it's just baffling that people would be proud of where they were born, as if they had any choice in the matter, so I suppose I'm biased.

I don't think that patriotism means being proud of where you were born. It's being proud of where you live. In a lot of cases, being proud of where they have CHOSEN to live.

I'm also American. I'm not particularly patriotic. I frequently refused to say the pledge of allegiance in school. But I don't think that patriotism is a bad thing, and I don't think it's anything like nationalism if you actually look. Patriotism is believing that you live in a good place, and being proud of that place. In my eyes, that's a good thing; it's constructive. And nationalism is destructive. Instead of "I love the place I live" it's "I hate the places other than where I live." And to me that's a HUGE difference; less a thin line and more of a mile-wide highway.

Being an immigrant is really the only reason anyone could have of being "proud" of where they live. If you were born and raised there, you didn't do jack shit to get there, so there's really no place of being proud - unless you've taken significant part in shaping your community.

Pride in where you live just because it's nice, if you didn't actively choose or contribute it, isn't gross - it's just totally unjustified.

Why do you think that you get to determine whether a person should or shouldn't have pride in something?

Because justified pride is linked to achievement? And you can't "achieve" being born somewhere?

It's sort of like being proud of being straight... it's just kind of stupid.

It's being proud of where you live.

It's not very different from being proud of where you were born, but it is still a very strange thought to proud of something like that.

Perhaps it's because I'm German and showing patriotism for anything other than the soccer world cup is pretty much frowned upon over here (hell, if my neighbour would hang a national flag out of their window tomorrow, I would think twice before inviting them to a party again), but I don't even understand the need for it. Why would you be proud of your nation with all the historical baggage? Why does it even matter?

I understand feeling a bit proud of your local community or government if they did something you approve of (or even better, voted for). But this general feeling of "fuck yeah, I'm xxx-ian" eludes me. Why do some people feel so protective about their patriotism?
