Bra sizing whaaa

[identity profile] te_llamo.livejournal.com 2013-06-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So you always hear those statistics about a ridiculous percentage of women not wearing the correct bra size, etc., etc. We're all familiar with them.

It always seemed to me that a lot of the people who had these issues were larger-breasted women, due to US sizing in bras making no sense for larger cup sizes, and other things of that nature.

So I wasn't expecting that much of a difference when I got a fitting at Victoria's Secret today, but it turns out I'm a 32 DD. I've been wearing a 34 B. Whaaaaa.

Any other surprises for anyone today?

Oh man, bra sizing is crazy. For years I wore a C cup, and then I sized myself and realized I was an F cup. I didn't think I was "that big" but the public perception of bra sizes can be so off.

(buying larger sizes can be really annoying :/)

I...don't know what my correct bra size is, honestly. I have larger breasts, and wear 42DD sports bras, but...They're really saggy. I sort of think my real size is a lot smaller than that. :X

How does the 32 DD fit? Because awhile ago I followed one of those "how to properly measure yourself" guides and it said I was a 34 DD and I was like no. No that must be wrong, since I've been wearing a 34/38 B. But now I'm wondering if I should give it a shot?

I think the only thing that really works is finding individual bras that fit well and ignoring what the tag might say. They're so inconsistent :(

It fit really well! Although I don't have much money right now, so I didn't buy it.

And yeah, that sizing might work for you. I was really confused about the sizing until the lady that fit me explained it to me. Cup sizes are not standard across band sizes--that is to say, a 32 B is not the same cup size as a 38 B--even though they're both Bs, the 38 is a larger cup size. There's also some correlation across cup sizes--for example a 32 DD has the same cup size as a 36 B (which is pretty close to what I was originally wearing). So while I was wearing what was pretty close to my cup size, the band size was way too big, which is why the backs of all my current bras ride up.

I'm not an expert, but I'd recommend at least giving it a shot, or getting a professional fitting. You never know! :)

The difference can be crazy, partially because we tend to have a skewed idea that one cup size is always big or small, but band-size and cup-size are relative. A Bra That Fits has some really good resources!

I tried the Internet re-sizing thing, where you measure yourself, and the new *mathematical* size didn't fit well at all. Maybe I'd have better luck with in-store fitting, since store sizes probably don't exactly reflect the measurement sizes. Can I just say, clothing sizes/vanity sizing is just terrible?

Re: Bra sizing whaaa

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hate buying bras. Even if I know exactly what my size is (two brands fit me perfectly), other brands are way too big in the same size. Either the cups are too large or too close to each other etc., so in the end I can choose between something that fits and something that is made out of quality material. Never both.

While what you were wearing and what you had measured can make some sense, I wouldn't even trust VS anyway- the best way is to look up how to measure yourself for a bra online.
I actually got a new bra today, too. All my bras were a 38C and were definitely ill-fitting. The bra I got is a 36 DD but fit much better, and I tried on a bra at the store today and the 38D also had the same lift. Cup and band size go hand in hand in getting the right fit- if the center part of your bra is not against your chest, your cups are too small and you need to go up a cup or 2.

Seconding the recommendation to take Victoria Secret's advice with a grain of salt. They'd have me in a 32B, but I need something more like a 28C.

When I first ever got properly fitted I WAS SO SURPRISED

They were lovely ladies though, explained what to look for in a bra and how they were going about choosing so I can find my own bras in the future. Really appreciated that. I'd been using a 12c/D, but turns out I was a 10E and it makes such a difference in support

(american wise, that's....34c/D changed to 32DD? Such a minor difference BUT THE SUPPORT HOLY SHIT)

whoa! I'm a 34D and I can't imagine fitting into a B cup of any band. does the 32DD feel right to you?

Re: Bra sizing whaaa

What bugs me is that nobody ever takes strap length into account. I have no trouble finding bras of an appropriate cup and band size, but the straps can never be shortened up quite enough to fit me properly. -_-

Victoria's Secret is notoriously unreliable. If at all possible, go someplace that specializes in non-average sizes for your fitting, even if you wind up being measured into a size outside their niche range.

I had been wearing a 38C for years (admittedly I had lost a little weight since I started wearing that size) but I was measured at around 32D-34DD depending very greatly on the make and model. :\ In my experience, a 34 accommodates a bit of sideboob better than the strict ribcage 32.

Re: Bra sizing whaaa

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't just happen to large-chested women -- I'm small and I ran up against this a little while ago.

I suspected I may have been wearing the wrong size (although looking back on it now, those were cheap-ass bras), so I went and got myself fitted at a lingerie store (Bras n Things). I normally buy a 10B (it looks like a ridiculously small number, but Australian sizing is different), but they told me I was actually an 8C. Problem there is that, even in this particular shop, they only had, like, 3 8C bras. Not styles of bras. 3 8C bras total. And they were like, $40 each. In the end, I went back to a 10B because they're way easier to find and cheaper as a result, and I got some better quality ones shortly after that so they're much more comfortable than the $5 monstrosities I was wearing at the time.

I would be THRILLED to find quality bras in my size for $40.

I think a ton tends to depend on style and brand and all that business. I got sized and put at a 36C, but 38B feels a lot better. It's not a huge difference, but enough to notice, which is what really matters. Try on every bra you can get your hands on!

I don't know. I used to wear a 34D - 36D and I measured myself with the instructions I found on a website that sells nothing but bras (I forget which one) and apparently I'm still a 36, just a DD instead of a D. I think that's just cause I gained a a bit of weight from when I was in high school (which is when I was a 34D)

HOWEVER I have noticed that some bras that DAY they are a 36DD have spillage while others do not so IDEK

ALSO did anyone read about that French study that says bras are basically bad for your breasts and lead to more saggage earlier on? Something about how your tendons or whatever get weak from not having to support your breasts because the bra does all the work. I already take my bra off when I get home (usually because I like to change into pajamas/loungewear right away) but recently after reading that I've been experimenting with not wearing a bra when I go out a few times. I was self-conscious at first because I'm pretty large chested but I found that when I wear a tighter shirt/tank top I can't really tell the difference, unless I was doing jumping jacks or running or something.

If anyone wants info on bra sizing...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
If anyone wants info on bra sizing, read this blog post:

http://www.epbot.com/2013/04/everything-you-never-knew-you-needed-to.html

Pay particular attention to the graphic showing how cup volume is a function of both cup size and band size, i.e. a 40D holds a greater volume than a 34D.

Then read this post about how to put on a bra properly, using the "swoop and scoop" maneuver:

http://brasandbodyimage.wordpress.com/2012/09/05/putting-your-bra-on-properly/

This is very important. How carefully you measure and shop are moot if you aren't careful about how you put on a bra.

Finally, read this Reddit post about how to measure yourself (only has UK and US sizes, though):

WARNING: you may end up spending a LOT of time reading through comments, as educational as it may be...

http://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/comments/rh26h/is_getting_fitted_for_a_bra_as_humiliating_as_it/c469bi0

These changed my life, man.

I thought I was a 34C, but my measurements using the above guide came out as 32DD (!). I thought that was ridiculous, because I always thought that anything above a C (or especially a D) was HUGE and I have tiny boobs. I went out and tried on a 32DD using the "swoop and scoop" method and... holy shit, it fit perfectly! I tried on a 32D just in case and was pooching out over the top. After wearing a 32DD for a while, I can't get over how much more comfortable it is compared to my older bras. Yeah, the band is more snug and that takes some getting used to, but it's a good snug and doesn't cut into my torso. It also solved the problem I was having with my bra always riding up in front. More importantly, the wider DD cups mean the underwires never cut into my boobs! This is how it was supposed to be all along, people!

I'd be careful about Victoria's Secret. Before I read the above posts, I went there on a quest for a bra that wouldn't ride up in front and the girl who measured me (using a different technique than the above) insisted I was a 34B, even though bras of that size had me pooching out over the top (even without doing the "swoop and scoop"). She also said the riding-up problem meant my band was too big and I might want to try a larger band. This seemed to make sense, but I had already gone from a 36B to 34C to fix the problem of my bra riding up in back... Arg! Anyway, she was so many kinds of wrong, I can't even.

Upside: I have a bra that fits! Downside: a DD bra in a 32 band is so much harder to find than I expected. I thought only people with cup sizes above DDD couldn't go to 'regular' stores. So far, Macy's has been a success, but forget about somewhere like Target.

I went from a 34B to a 32D. Weird moment because i never thought my boobs could EVER be D sized... but they were.

I'm 27 and apparently a 30DDD and I have no idea what to do with that information.
I'm kind of irrationally angry at the internet. I know I have a really small torso and every time I read one of these stories I'd think "uh oh..." and it turns out I was right...
*sigh*.

I've seen this (http://bustyresources.wikia.com/wiki/Migrated_breast_tissue) on too many women, so there must be some truth to those statistics.

I've never had this so for a long time I thought most women just have a lot of fat on those parts. lol
