I mostly agree with your comment except for the teenage girls bit. That's equally insulting to the slash/Sterek fans of all sexual orientations who are neither teenagers nor girls.

Really? That's insulting? I referenced a group of fans that, given what I've seen on tumblr, the network and it's typical audience, and the subject matter, seem to be the target demographic (or at least one demographic), and are what the secret maker mentioned, and you're insulted by this?

Yes, it was insulting. Because when slash is reduced to something "teenage girls" enjoy, the unfortunate underlying implication is that it's silly and juvenile and less than something that men or even adult women enjoy. You're belittling a large group of people in a rather misogynistic manner, which is odd considering you took exception to the OP doing the exact same thing.

You're going to pretend you don't recognize the negative connotations that go along with people associating something with teenage girls, whether that's your intention or not (it definitely was with the OP, IMO)? Okaaaaaay. See I can be condescending in my response too!

If you choose to engage in an online debate, prepare for responses that disagree with you. You're allowed to critique the OP but then take it so personally when someone comments on your choice of words? Who's the special little snowflake now?

Just don't try to make me out to be the big bad misogynistic wolf when I reference a demographic in a show that, from what I can tell, was designed to appeal to that demographic. Don't put words in my mouth and be insulted by what I didn't say.

If there are negative connotations associated with stuff teenage girls like that's not my fault. If someone sees teenage girls as universally silly and juvenile then that's their problem and they should work on it.

I think maybe you should do some reading. It's a pretty widely accepting idea that there are negative connotations that go hand in hand with reducing a hobby or topic to something "teenage girls" do. I'm actually really surprised you haven't heard of this before and that you're replying with such vitriol.

I don't care if it's a widely accepted idea; it's not an idea I accept. Most people I know, when confronted with a piece of media they don't care to consume, shrug their shoulders and move on. They have better shit to do than stand around and mock at the people who do consume that media. *I* have better shit to do than stand around worrying about the supposed negative connotations of teenager girls enjoying a piece of media that was designed with them in mind.

I could say something, say, incredibly racist and then say I don't agree with the widely accepted connotation that that statement is racist. And I would fully expect to be taken to task for it. I certainly wouldn't aggressively argue with people who did so.

You do realize implying that anything teenage girls like, or that teenage girls themselves, are all inherently silly and somehow "not adult" is misogynistic and kind of an asshole thing to say, right? I agree that people shouldn't act like everyone who likes slash is a teenage girl, since it's patently untrue, but implying that teenage girls are bad or lesser than men or adult women is shitty in its own right.

I didn't say that I agree with that implication. I said that it existed in society and that people shouldn't perpetuate that stereotype if they're trying to argue against people like the OP. Even if it WERE true that only teenage girls like slash, it still wouldn't be appropriate to dismiss it as a "teenage girl" activity (as long as such activities are unfortunately treated as silly, etc.).
