can someone explain to me how climbing scenery is pretentious? I don't understand and I'm not sure if it's because I'm esl or because it doesn't make sense...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see calling it grandstanding or showing off, but not really pretentious, so I don't know.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea, sorry :(

It doesn't make sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure OP actually knows what that word means.

Well, it, um... I mean it... Um. Nope. No, I got nothin'.

And I love some of them for doing it. *g* Especially at open air festivals when lots of taller people are standing in the way of a good view at the stage.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I like it too.

Yes, this. Being 5'1" means that everything helps.

Complaining about things not being punk is the least punk thing there is.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it stupid and kind of rude? I mean, if I'm forced to think about it.

Someone spent time designing that stage, more time if the scenery was show-specific. Chances are it's not meant to hold up under people climbing all over it, and that's the kind of thing that can get people killed and other people sued. Idiots.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
uh. if it was designed specifically for an act, that's a tally mark in favor of it being designed with the band's habits in mind, so it'd actually be a hell of a lot safer than if it was a generic set piece. but stages are designed to hold metric tons of weight so one little emo kid in flannel is not going to break anything

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been curious how the people how design and set-up the stages feel about it. It seems like the kind of thing that could potentially go badly wrong. Do acts who like doing that sort of thing approach the set-people and ask them things like "If I tug on this, will it pull the entire sound rig down or anything?" or "If I climb this, will it kill me?". Do stage-people who know they're going to have upcoming acts who like to do this make preparations beforehand?

I don't know, maybe it's safer than it looks. Or more pre-planned than it looks. Or maybe every time certain acts come onstage, the stage crew start facepalming and the insurance people start paying attention?

I think it's a lot safer than it looks, well, depending on the set up of course. My frame of reference for the last ten years is the M'Era Luna festival, and especially the sides look like they could carry about 50 people climbing on them all at once.

Also, yes - at least with gothic/metal/punk stuff the stage people know someone is likely to climb something. And some acts/singers definitely do it all the time - see The Crüxshadows, for example. I've never had a concert with them where Rogue refrained from doing so.

I am not sure about indoor stages but I know outdoor stages are designed to stand up to high velocity wind/rain and other types of extreme weather so they are relatively sturdy. One person climbing on them is unlikely to be an issue.

If there's any danger from someone climbing on it, someone's done their job wrong. If adding the weight of a wafer thin rockstar can pull the set down, it's probably in danger of falling down of it's own accord. If it's an outdoor gig, you're looking at potential of high winds and heavy rain to prep against, plus a lot of vibration from the amps, and a lot of enclosed fans jumping around if it's indoors. You'd hope none of that stuff is overloaded, seeing as it's above the band's heads the entire gig.

Freddie Mercury did it. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for anyone.

I think it's completely staged. No pun intended.

Risky, yes, pretentious... nah. As the singer I'd be worried about dropping the mic. As the techie, I'd be worried about the singer dropping the mic.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you need to learn the correct definition of pretentious before trying to use it in a sentence.

But climbing is fun!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Stop being against fun.

[Sepia-toned or black and white picture of a man singing on-stage while clinging from a beam high on the scenery.]

I think singers who climb on the stage set up are pretentious, not punk.

[personal profile] byonicluna 2013-06-16 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about you, OP, but if I could climb and sing at the same time I totally would.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-06-16 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
At this point, they're likely just imitating Lux Interior, who lived and died more punk than thou.
