You realize that the reason people asked for transcriptions in the first place was to help members with vision problems, right? Trolling people with disabilities makes you a special class of dick.

Yeah, well it go annoying shoving it in the middle of the thread. Either put it first at the top of the thread, or put them all in a list in the general comments section.

1. It can't be put at the top of the thread if the transcriber doesn't get here until after other people have commented.

2. "Being annoyed" does not absolve you of being a dick for trolling people with disabilities.

1 So there is no barrier to shoving them in the general comments section then. Or transcribing them before the post goes live.

2 And?

The transcriptions should be done by the OPs and posted along with the .image file of the secret. There would be a transcript below every image of a secret. But I'm not calling the shots here.

This I could get behind.

I kinda want to see a real secret posted of this "transcription" too.

It's annoying to force people to do that, though. It might actually decrease people submitting secrets.

Putting it in the thread at random is also annoying, both to read and the randomness of it makes it useless as a transcription service. You are halfway into the thread before you know what the secret is. You either have to use ctrl+F to get them, or stumble around. Might as well list them separate if you have to Crtl+F anyway. Right now it is the worst of all worlds and worse than useless.

Teal Deer: Whatever you do is gonna annoy someone, might as well annoy them in a way that is useful.

Copy pasting the text of the secret is a minimum effort, but describing the picture - well, I guess that's where my suggestion crumbles because that would be annoying. Seems like many secrets don't really need the visual but a few of them wouldn't make sense. Oh well then.

Come to that, if you can't be bothered to make a relevant visual then it shouldn't be posted either. This is an image based secret community. If it was just text secrets it might as well be a graffiti wall. Text only secrets should be rejected or at least told to take it to open comments thread.

I think the point is it wasn't like this in that in the beginning. I've been in other communities where it was common to do it, and I just gave up. I actually don't mind transcripts in comments personally, if someone's willing to do it - but I'm not willing to do it, personally. And really, how many people are we doing this for? There was like one secret about it, and I'm not even sure there are actually anyone who is visually impaired on here - partly because it IS known as an image-based community.

I do not understand how the placement of a transcription anywhere in the thread annoys you. Other people in this conversation have suggested that the utility of a transcription depends on highly on its placement in a thread, and that makes sense to me. Since you clearly are not concerned about using the transcription, you seem to be saying that scrolling through one comment in a thread is terribly annoying for you. How do you do anything on the internet ever? *boggles*

Its already been said there is no problem with transcriptions, just they are pretty useless scattered at random. They need moved to a single thread, or incorporated into the submission in order to be useful.

what i don 't get is why transcription comments annoy people they aren't meant for in the first place

they aren't harder to skip than any other comment, so i guess someone else trying to be helpful to the best of their ability is somehow annoying?

yes, that's sure a good reason for a thing

just because you don't get it, doesn't mean it isn't a problem

i think that it would definitely be a good idea to organize them

I think we are on the same page, Anon.

Firstly, I think anyone posting troll transcriptions is disrespectful and childish. I can't stand to see it.

But I also hate the real transcriptions because it's a poorly executed reflex to a problem that doesn't exist. I know that some people said they wouldn't mind seeing them and might even use them for secrets they have trouble reading. But they don't need them.

This community is based on visuals and it would make sense to want to open access to people who can't see. But the transcriptions themselves are largely useless due to formatting and the transcriber's unfamiliarity with the fandoms in the secrets. It's a worthy effort they have made and I applaud what they're trying to do, I just don't think it's something that needs to be done. That it's being done because of some SJW whine rankles.

I would certainly think otherwise if there were a NEED for the transcriptions and would do what I could to help write transcriptions so they are actually beneficial to anyone who needs them. But there isn't a need. And the transcriptions posted so far wouldn't be beneficial to someone who needs them. The intent is kind but the execution is as much a mockery as the troll transcriptions some immature people have posted.

although i would hardly call someone's ill-advised but well intended efforts a mockery, though i can certainly see how they'd currently be subpar to a lot of people

personally, i find them useful just because there's still a lot of secrets that have difficult or annoying visual themes, but aside from that it occurs to me that i really wouldn't know what a useful transcription would look like

It seems to me like a transcription-on-demand service makes more sense? If somebody's having trouble making out a secret, yell for a transcription in the comments. You're pm guaranteed a response, and a higher likelihood that the respondent will get the facts right about the picture. Just seems like it would be more helpful.

Because I would have thought that if the aim was to make the whole comm interpretable through text-only, you would need a much more rigorous system with a dedicated thread to make it worthwhile. The half-measure, though terribly well-intentioned, seems like a lot of work for a fairly slip-shod result.

OTOH, if it's working for people, it's no skin off my nose. But is it actually making a positive difference to people's use of the comm? And if so, that's awesome, but is it worth having a conversation about better ways of implementation?

Cause for all I hate trolling, left in the wilds of the internet, anything tropey like this is crying out for meme-mutation.
