I do not know him (and I do not want to kiss him), but why on earth would you be ashamed of being Croatian? I'm not really sure what reasons you'd be referring to, but all of us living wherever we are, we're all just people, and the last thing you should be ashamed of is where you come from. It's more important what you do with your life than where you come from.

If everyone is ashamed, then there's no particular reason to dwell on being ashamed to be from one country in particular. There's got to be more to the OP's shame than a general understanding that there are probably some skeletons in the closet.

To the OP:

There shall always be people who will think the worst of you when they hear your place of origin. But there are also as many people who will think "wow, a foreigner!" when they see you and won't care for two bits where do you come from or what your forefathers did.

It might not help the prejudice, but it does need to be remembered.

My first exposure to the nationality was Luka Kovac (/Goran Visnjic), so I will always have a knee-jerk positive perspective there.
