Rebranding Feminism

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
The misandry thread got me to wondering...

Since internet social justice warriors have taken over "feminism" and made it more about hating men than promoting women, is it time to start calling the equality-between-the-sexes by another name, so the actual message can get across without hate coming from all sides to overpower it?

I mean... to be fair, the "new" feminists should have to come up with a new word to call themselves, but let's be real - that ain't happening.

internet social justice warriors have taken over "feminism" and made it more about hating men than promoting women,

they haven't. that's ridiculous. you're ridiculous.

to go into a little more detail, getting rid of the name feminism is only going to mean abandoning at least a part of what that name means. i really can't get around this fact: getting rid of it means giving in to the people who don't believe that women have unique problems in modern society and that sexism is over. it means abandoning a whole structure which i think has and continues to be productive and positive in the world, all in reaction to a temporary and relatively unimportant problem - a few people on the internet.

the term 'feminism' wasn't abandoned in response to feminists who were much more radical in much more meaningful ways than the internet SJWs in the 1960s, 1970s, 80s. why should we abandon it now?

Er, I wanted to clarify something: the people who don't believe that women have unique problems in modern society and that sexism is over

That should clearly be "and who believe that sexism is over" because that's what they believe. My bad.

About once every twenty-seconds-into-a-conversation-about-feminism somebody will suggest that we should look instead at 'humanism' (except the word's take), or an 'equalism' that's gender neutral in its terminology.

Which is a good idea in theory. But try it. You'll spend most of your time edging around the giant elephant in the room until somebody finally breaks down and says "wow, women get a lot of shit for being women".

I'm not giving tumblr jerks anything.

Plus I'm not even sure how you could "rebrand" something so amorphous in the first place.

The fourth wave is going to suck, isn't it?

Considering how much certain parts of the third wave suck? I'd say it's all downhill from here - at least for a while.

Maybe it will stay on the internet where we can hit "ignore" most of the time.

No.

Nope.

Outside of Tumblr I really don't think anyone has taken over anything. If you get offline and actually talk about feminism with people they know what the hell you're talking about, and it isn't about hating men.

that's stupid, no one even cares about internet social justice warriors irl so what's the point of trying to call feminism something else just because of some yahoos on tumblr

I think it's important to realize that tumblr isn't very representative outside of itself. It's entire SJ culture there is very insular, and seems mostly grounded in popular opinion, wikipedia links, and the opinion of any given BNF or internet personality who people tend to look up to.

They aren't really claiming anything. They're just overzealous young people puzzling their way through things they don't completely understand, who are also engaging with it to fit in, be noticed, and feel validated.

Feminism is certainly egalitarian, but the focus on women is also still too crucial to give up. I don't think it needs to be replaced.

Except no they haven't? Sure it seems that way, but that's just the internet doing it's usual thing of making vocal = majority...and maybe men who are convinced that feminism is about taking away their rights to be dickheads

Re: Rebranding Feminism

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
If you bring up feminism to people who are against it, it doesn't matter what you call it. It's been that way for years, long before tumblr.

So...no. We've been dealing with this since the dawn of the idea, and it's not because of the name.

You're try way too hard to stir up wank, anon. Do you have nothing fulfilling in your life? Does trying to troll half-dead fandom coms make you feel like you're worth something? Does it ease the pain of knowing outside of this, that you have nothing?

Don't people who deem feminism unacceptable in some way but don't actually think bitches should get back in the kitchen usually call themselves "equalists" or "egalitarians"? Those words don't piss people off as much as "feminists", but I feel like they're pretty established as mainstream feminist alternatives by now.

Re: Rebranding Feminism

Feminism doesn't mean that I'm an angry, hairy, man-hating lesbian who wants to take over an island in the Pacific and populate it solely with women.

Feminism, for me, means true equality between the sexes. It means that I don't get treated like a lesser species of human for having boobs.

That's all I want. To be treated like a person.

So I'm going to keep calling myself a feminist.

NO
