Re: Misandry... Oh dear.

Mostly because that Misandry is not a thing that exists in any tangible, institutional way.

I'd actually argue it does in a lot of public elementary schools. Teachers are often a lot meaner to little boys than little girls. It's leading to a small but present achievement gap in academics.

But again, is that really misandry or a result of misogyny or other institutionalized gender ideals and roles?

Does it matter to the victims? What the heck are we supposed to say to them? "Shut up, eight year old, just take your out of school suspension and remember that girls couldn't vote until 1920." The whole backfiring argument is valid but usually functions as a way to shut people up rather than further discussion.

It matters because this is a discussion on whether the concept of misandry has real tangible results in the world and I was suggesting that your example was not a tangible result from misandry.

I would disagree, because what I've seen (which includes odd ways my little brother was treated growing up) doesn't seem to have much to do with misogyny backfiring. I agree that other things (child custody inequality, for example) ARE an example of misogyny backfiring (though I try not to use that word as it implies hatred/dislike where often it's more complex than that).

I will say that education is one of the only places I can see tangible misandry, though. I think most misandry complaints are bullshit.

Wait. Is this another too-subtle-for-me trolling conversation I'm not supposed to respond to seriously?

No. We've had conversations about this sort of thing offline. She's being very serious right now.

It is the result of education shifting to focus on female learning style education. It doesn't matter if it is the result of misogyny (it isn't), but it IS happening. Boys are being horribly left behind in terms of schooling.

It may be happening but it's not a good example of tangible results of misandry in the world, was my point. Which is what this thread was about.

It's almost comical the way people keep insisting that everything bad that happens to a man is due to misogyny

Have you never seen much on the theory of patriarchy and how it influences and effects both men and women in a negative way? It's not exactly anything new.

That's a fair point, but I think that it would be better to find a different term, considering just how effectively MRA's have hi-jacked this one.

Admittedly, I don't really know much about what goes on in elementary schools. Just that whenever I hear anything about public schools it sounds increasingly horrible for boys and girls. :/

What I meant to say, I guess, is that it doesn't seem like the pre-existing problems for girls have been fixed either, so just what the fuck is going on in these schools?

Now I can field this one...

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-06-18 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Mind you, this isn't a magic answer for every facet of the problem, but it has magnified many pre-existing issues, added a few, and done only a pittance to address issues the way it was intended to.

When we shifted our focus of leaving to having teachers be assessed and even paid by the test score, we didn't start "holding them accountable" so much as make the profession a nightmare for everybody in the damn school. Trying to cram so much into even grade school for those dreaded assessments means the pace of the class cannot stop. And you better fucking believe children are being left behind.

This isn't a cynical guy reading the newspapers. I've worked in elementary.

That's really depressing. D:

Thanks for the information.

Teachers also help little boys a lot more than little girls, if we're going there.

And I can personally attest that girls get told a shit ton that they just "aren't cut out for math/science." Fuckers. /engineer
