how do you prefer the transcriptions?

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Since I keep getting mixed feedback ranging from "explanations are good" to "just transcribe the text" to "don't transcribe at all", I'm wondering how you would prefer the transcriptions.

Should I simply transcribe the text and mention the fandom?

Transcribing plus fandom plus characters (if there are any)?

Transcribing plus fandom plus characters plus description of actions (if there are any)?

Transcribing plus fandom plus characters plus description of actions plus description of the picture?

Should I continue adding a glossary of what some terms and fandom or internet neologisms?

Is the current format okay?

[Picture description]

Text of the secret

[Notes, if any.]

Anything else?

I prefer to err in the side of "too much information", myself, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I like the way you've been doing it. (You are never going to reach a consensus.)

I find the explanations extremely helpful and inclusive. You go to a lot of work making the transcriptions and those who don't appreciate them should skip them.

Thank you, by the way! We don't say that nearly enough.

Thanks!

The feedback should be useful, if nothing else. I'm still not entirely sure what's the best way to do this. It's been trial and error so far!

I'd say describe the picture, then have the text. No notes. No glossary. Keep it simple.

Is there any particular reason not to add notes/glossary?

I mean, I don't mind not adding those, but I wonder why some of the negative reactions to those?

How about things like non-intuitive pormanteaus? Like, for example, at first glance you wouldn't guess that "AkuRoku" means "Axel/Roxas", from the Kingdom Hearts fandom. Or should I let the readers guess from context in cases like those?

ayrt
(I'm having trouble with words tonight so if this isn't clear please say so.)

I think that when you put in notes you are expanding to the secret, and I think transcribing should not be adding anything but simply stating exactly what is in the secret and what the image is of.

I understand what you mean.

Hmm. How about I add those sorts of clarifications in a different, maybe anonymous comment? Maybe a different account, if it doesn't prove to be too time-consuming?

Re: how do you prefer the transcriptions?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, idk. It's up to you the way you do it, but that seems to be making things overly complicated and time consuming for you. There are obviously some people finding the way you're doing it now helpful so you could just keep the clarifications. It just bothers me personally but I might be the minority.

I appreciate the notes because often I don't know what the cute shippy name means or even what the fandom is or who the character are in the secret. I don't understand why someone who made the secret would object to me knowing what Hannigram means or who the character is in the secret they made because knowing those things is key to responding to the secret, right?

Thanks for doing these, BTW.

I figured at least someone would want to know things like those!

Like I told anon above, maybe putting clarifications in a different comment could work?

Re: how do you prefer the transcriptions?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
But if you don't know the fandom or the characters why would it matter if it's spelled out or not? If you don't know it you don't know it.

Just a note from someone who has trouble reading text, the way you space everything out makes it difficult for me to read. I appreciate some paragraph breaks but the way you've been doing it for some reason makes it near impossible for me to read the whole thing.

Obviously everyone is different, but since you asked...

Re: how do you prefer the transcriptions?

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-20 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
So, less space breaks? I tried to mimic how the text is arranged in the secrets, but it's no problem doing it differently.

Re: how do you prefer the transcriptions?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, less space breaks. Like I said, everyone is different but I would definitely find it helpful. :)

Okay, I'll be careful with line breaks from now on.

regarding emoticons

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-20 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, also, what about smilies? I started, er, interpreting them because it occurred to me that those must look weird if someone is using a screen reader.

How do screen readers interpret smilies/emoticons? Should I leave them as they are (ex., :D), or maybe substitute them for [excited smile] or [excited smile emoticon] or something else?

Re: regarding emoticons

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I just came hear to say this. Unfortunately, I don't know how screenreaders read off emotes. If they do read them as-is--"colon-parenthesis" "colon-D"--then yeah, I'd say the [excited smiley face/emote] would be the better route. It seems ponderous and a little confusing to put them in the glossary.

Hopefully someone better informed about screen readers can answer this.

Re: regarding emoticons

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-20 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'll go the "[excited smiley face/emote] / substitution in the actual transcription" route.

Also, that should make the glossary way less off-putting.

Re: regarding emoticons

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds good to me.

Also, I know I wrote it like that, it may be best just to pick either face or emote. I just wasn't sure which would be more apt. ^^;

Anyway, lovely work! It's nice of you to put so much into this.

I find the editorialisation a bit patronising, and I imagine I'd be pretty annoyed if one of my secrets were to end up transcribed with a definition or description with which I did not agree.

However, I absolutely don't think my feelings on this mean I think you should stop. If the above scenario ever should happen, I'll call you on it. The rest of the time, if you're happy doing the extra work that you do and since it does seem to be genuinely helpful to some people, I'll just scroll past and we'll all go on living our lives with our varying mileage.

Re: how do you prefer the transcriptions?

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-20 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, with all the feedback here I decided I'm going to do that sort of stuff differently now, trying to just describe things as they look (I'll try to avoid guessing here, and limit myself to the fandom, the characters if I can identify them, and maybe the actions and scene, without guessing when I don't know what's going on) and then the transcription, and if there are "notes" to add, I will reply to myself, so people can skip that comment too.

I'll also do all the transcription comments in a row, before doing the "notes" ones, if there are any, so by that time the comments should have collapsed and people won't have to look at them for so long.

I'll avoid personal opinions too.

Also, yeah, call me on it if I screw up! So far I've just been guessing blindly how to do this, and feedback is very very welcome!

I like having the fandom and characters noted. :)

Re: how do you prefer the transcriptions?

Yeah, I'll do my best to name those, if nothing else. :)

That usually helps me too! Because I suck at recognising faces, even in the shows I am really familiar with...

Also thank you, whomever you are! You are doing a great job!
