You're not forced to like Neil Gaiman, you know.

(Also, he wrote a plethora of really good short stories... Why would you start with American Gods, of all things?)

but how else can they get their hipster points for when the show starts?

There's plenty of time for that. A Study In Emerald isn't that long to read.

OP

No, but I do get curious when lots of people keep mentioning how they liked it offhand (as opposed to people telling me to read it)

I like the challenge of a long book (and the cover was nice) C: Might as well leap into it, and hey if magically getting 'Hipster points' from reading a book ruffles other-anon's feathers - that's a bonus C:

Ah, ok, yeah, that makes sense. If the length of the book is a positive point for you, then go for it! It's a book that I love and I hope you do too.

(And for added hipster-points, I recommend A Study In Emerald, which is so far my absolute favourite by Gaiman (haven't read The Ocean at the End of the Lane yet). It has Sherlock Holmes and Lovecraftian horrors in it! What could be MORE hipster? ;D )

The reason why I was a bit puzzled at your choice was because American Gods is definitely not the easier of Gaiman's book to read, and it definitely has that thing where most people will either really love it or hate it with every fibre of their being. It's also really long. But if it's what suits you better, don't even pay attention to me and enjoy yourself!

...maybe because a lot of people like American Gods and recommend it highly?

Christ, what is it about Neil Gaiman that makes people here forget that their tastes and inclinations are not the same as everyone else's?

Um, what? O_o

I'm not trying to impose my tastes on anyone, I just think that short stories might be an easier way to discover Neil Gaiman. American Gods is amazing, but it's also a really long book, and might not fit OP's tastes whereas short stories are, well, short, and they have a variey of themes and style which would help them figure out more easily whether they like Gaiman at all. It's absolutely possible to like other stuff by Neil Gaiman and not American Gods.
