If you... don't want to read it, why on earth are you trying so hard? I mean, I like it, but this all seems odd.

Don't get your hopes up too high.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, that's a coincidence. I've just started reading this book for the first time as well, after it sat in my room for months and months. I have read some of his other stuff, and found it kind of underwhelming, but I figured it was a bit unfair to judge him purely by his earliest work.

It's even got the same cover as the one in this secret. I'm actually kinda digging it so far; it's reasonably enjoyable. I wouldn't say I'm very emotionally engaged, but it's paced well, and the prose is pretty unobtrusive; I'm just flying through it. (Although that might be partly because the book I just finished was Tender is the Night and that was really a bit of a slog.)

I've had American Gods sitting on my shelf for a few years and haven't read it. Haven't read any Gaiman yet. Your secret almost makes me want to pick it up and try... hmm.... idk if I will.

I hope you enjoy it, though. :)

I'm really glad everyone on the comments so far says this book sucks - I've tried to read it four times and I cannot get into it at all.

Is there a better Gaiman book to read? (I have read Good Omens, it was ok - not great but not bad.)

If you posted this looking for people to encourage your or something, then...I think you miscalculated, as F!S seems mostly to be full of people who don't like Neil Gaiman. Every time a secret mentions him, the comments fill up with "he's overrated" and "he's boring" and "I hate him."

In any case, you might not like it. In fact, you might not have any interest in it. I mean, you've been holding on to it for a year and have had to force yourself to pick it up. That says it all, doesn't it? Good luck and all, but I'm gonna hold my breath. You shouldn't make yourself read things just because other people have said that you should.

That's the only book of his I genuinely like...but people seem to either like it the least of everything he's done or else they outright hate it.

I think the "Moving To America" sections are a lot more engaging than the main plot.

If you don't like it, might I suggest the Graveyard book? It's the only one of Gaimnan's stories that I actually liked. I never even finished Neverwhere, it was that dull. And I didn't really care for the book version of Coraline. I like the movie much better.

[Picture is the cover of Neil Gaiman's book "American Gods". It has blurbs saying:

"Gaiman has a rich imagination... and an ability to tackle large themes" - Philip Pullman

"Author's preferred text"

"Winner of the HUGO, NEBULA, BRAM STOKER, SFX AND LOCUS Awards"]

I'M GONNA DO IT

I'M GOING TO FINALLY READ A NEIL GAIMAN BOOK

(I've owned it for about a year and keep forgetting to or stalling. I'm not really sure what it's about, I've no idea or context so getting myself started has been a major problem)

BUT I STARTED IT TODAY

I HOPE I ENJOY IT

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT BUT EVERYONE SAYS IT'S GOOD???

WISH ME LUCK ON MY UNKNOWN READING JOURNEY!

:D :D :D

Actually not that excited, but gotta give it a try. HYPING MYSELF UP GO GO GO

God dammit, I can't count how many times somebody has been like "Okay, I'll try out Neil Gaiman, I guess I'll start with American Gods" and I wanted to be like HHHRGGGGGG because that's my least favorite of the ones I've read and why is it so highly recommended? But IDK, maybe you will like it more than I did.

I'll buck the trend and say "Yeah! Have fun, enjoy!" I really liked American Gods. It's not everyone's cup of tea, sure, but the concept fired my imagination. Though I was more interested in all the side characters than Wednesday. Ibis and Jaquel in particular rocked.

It's the only Gaiman book I read, because I am reading/watching everything I can find with Norse gods in it, just for fun. It was not hugely my thing, but it was okay I guess? I'm not a literary connoisseur however, I prefer my books snappy and genreriffic.

Neverwhere is a million times easier to read, and it's definitely better. It also doesn't have the anticlimactic drop-off at the end most of his work has. I could NOT get into American Gods.

You're not forced to like Neil Gaiman, you know.

(Also, he wrote a plethora of really good short stories... Why would you start with American Gods, of all things?)
