Yeah, it's not a great show. For all the reasons you say, really - the humor is almost painfully broad and the stereotypes are at best really, really well-worn and unrealistic.

But at the end of the day, it's still a show I enjoy watching because it has Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry in it and the rest of the cast is also very good. It has a likable enough cast to make up for that stuff (not that Big Bang Theory's cast isn't good, but it's the difference between a cast that I respect as performers and a cast that I love and think are comedic geniuses)

I love Moss but Roy has some of his moments too. Especially when they were both trying to convince Jen that the entire internet was contained in a small black box.

But, yeah, it could be just as bad as the Big Bang Theory in terms of nerd and sexist stereotypes.

[Picture is the main cast from the TV show "The IT Crowd", two men and a woman. Next to one of the men is the text "I love Moss though because how could you NOT love Moss?"]

I am genuinely disturbed when people rave about this show. It has its moments, but it's just as bad as Big Bang Theory for being a collection of dumb "geek" stereotypes. That episode with Jen and the shoe obsession wasn't just bad in a sexist sense, it was painfully unfunny because lol women and shoes, amirite?

Honestly...I tried to like this, but besides one episode (Where they go to the theater - I don't even remember the name), it wasn't very engaging.

I can't compare it to BBT because I avoid that show.

I love this show and dont curr if that disturbs you

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I..sort of disagree on some of it? Well, not the sexism when I re-watched it but I never felt like I was made fun of. Moss and Roy are actually viewed as people and otherwise pretty normal. The joke isn't the fact "lol, they're geeks. Laugh at them." The joke, most of the time, was more that they're geeks who are smarter than the majority of people they work for. Yeah, they were stereotypes but you were suppose to root for them, not laugh at them.
More than anything, it poked fun of "normal people."

I mean, the internet episode was brilliant episode in showing this.

The shoes bit with Jen was eh, but the best part of that episode was Moss and the fire. That entire segment was gold.

No. For one thing, all TBBT does is mock geek culture then turn around and want geeks to buy all their merchandise. I'm not in the UK so idk if the same thing happens with The IT Crowd in the merch respect, but the show doesn't just spend the whole time pointing and laughing at nerds.

It's been a while since I've seen either show but IT crowd is more of a workplace comedy and it goes a bit beyond just making fun of weird geeks and just has in general strange work characters. It's full of stereotypes and the humor can be a bit dumb but it never really bothered me that much.

Yeah I wasn't too impressed by it. There were some funny moments, but a lot of the "geek" in-jokes relied on the same boring "girls not into geek" stuff.

I do agree that the show was sexist at times. However, I think the geek jokes were more laughing with geeks instead of mocking geeks like BBT. It had a lot of IT jokes as well.

I didn't feel offended while watching IT Crowd (geek wise), like I have while watching BBT.

Moss is lovely :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I love Jen because she actually makes me laugh. I always feel like the female characters in sitcoms just aren't funny and aren't given funny lines/personalities/stories because they're supposed to be "smarter" or "better" than the men, who do get all the funny bits. Jen is just as flawed as Moss and Roy but in a different way. She makes me laugh just as much.

Also, Matt Berry's delivery cracks me up. If you don't like it, I understand. It's not for everyone, but it disturbs you? It seems odd that you would be disturbed by this show.

That episode was just so god-awful.
I don't feel quite as strongly about it not being good as you, OP, but I agree. It's definitely not as funny as people say.

I can't really judge it because I haven't seen that much, but I watched a few episodes and went "...wait, THIS is the show people rave about all the time?"

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Right?

More like WRONG. :D

You're totally entitled to your opinions, OP, but I think IT Crowd is much more accurate in it's portrayal of geeks, even as it goes further over the top than Big Bang Theory. I actually agree with you on BBT as it's a show I find highly distasteful, but IT Crowd does everything BBT wishes it could do and then some. The only problem with ITC is that it doesn't have female geeks. Yes, there are way more men than women in IT work, that's just truth, but you'd think Roy would find some compatible women for himself instead of the usual string of cute non-nerds to go out with. (Supermodel gamer doesn't count because she shot him down.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god. Some friends made me sit through several episodes of this drivel. I wanted to barf, it was the worst show I've ever seen.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who watched and enjoyed both shows, I have to disagree at the comparison. I understand what is the problem with both, but they really are both very different shows with different senses of humor and different tones.

I like it. But I also like BBT. I'm also a geek who can laugh at herself. I mean, really, a lot of the stuff I'm into is kinda silly.

But I don't care, because I'm having too much fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
The show has its moments (Richard Ayoade is love!) but yeah, I just keep quiet when people gush about it. It's okay. I agree that the humor for Jen's character relies far too heavily on dumb female stereotypes, though. Shoes? Really guys, that's the best you can do?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
The IT Crowd is one of the most clever and hilarious shows I've ever seen.

You're not British, are you? Your secret reeks of "I don't get it".

The joke was about Jen and shows, not about women and shoes.

And the stereotypes are the point of the joke.

[personal profile] chibichan 2013-06-21 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, OP, but I have to disagree with you. I hate BBT with a passion and love the IT Crowd. IT Crowd is everything BBT wishes it could be and more.

BBT is obviously (and painfully) making fun of geeks. It makes fun of geeks and then makes it look like it's actually doing them justice, when it's clearly not (they also want you to buy their merchandise, as it was mentioned by somebody else). IT Crowd? Not so. IT Crowd laughs WITH you, not AT you. And IT Crowd, for me, wins for that alone.

The episode with Jen and her shoes? I can agree it could be taken as sexist, but I'll tell you something. Compare Jen to Penny in BBT. Jen's obsession with shoes in that episode of the IT Crowd is clearly ironic and it's to be taken as a joke, as satire. The exaggerate way in which her foot twists after having worn the shoes is proof enough. Penny? She's a waitress who wants to be an actress, has been a waitress for 6 seasons of BBT, cannot manage her money for the life of her, she spends too much money on shoes and cannot pay her bills and has to use the guys' wi-fi because she can't afford her own. She's the classic dumb blonde, she embodies all the wrong traits of women and she's, in my opinion, one of the most horrible and offensive female stereotypes that TV has ever seen. What's worst is, what Penny does and the way she lives is passed off as fairly normal in the TV show. Her life is only occasionally passed off as ironic. She's there to represent the non-geek audience and, being a female character, the female audience is somehow supposed to relate to her. I don't like relating to Penny. She's overall in a worst situation than the geeks, and yet the show keeps making fun of the geeks, who are intelligent, have jobs and, as far as I can see, are okay financially. But she's treated as normal - actually, I think the show tries way too hard to make you relate to Penny, tries too hard to let her pass as the average person, when really, she's just a terrible stereotype.

Jen? She is actually normal, rather than just pretending to be normal. She's way less of a stereotype compared to Penny. She actually has social skills and shows them off in the show. When has Penny ever shown social skills? Jen is not overly pretty, stupid or a wreck financially. She's a NORMAL woman. She doesn't know much about IT stuff, but that's the point of the series. I'd much rather relate to Jen than Penny.

IT Crowd is not just about geeks alone, but a bunch of other people as well. Characters are much better written in the IT Crowd than BBT. I could go on for hours on how Moss is better than Sheldon and how Moss is well-treated by the show-runners and writers, instead of being cruelly made fun of, like Sheldon is.

You will probably be "disturbed" by my comment, but whatever. I just hope my arguments were clear enough.
