It´s tricky when they use female voice actors for male characters. In Germany the voice actor of Ash from Pokemon was a female. But the voice sounds male...

I meant "ore" is especially not appropriate for women to use, but I know a female punk who is very tomboyish & a bit "crazy" and uses "ore" and I've heard from a male friend that he heard other females using it too and he dislikes it very much because it sounds dirty for a woman to speak like that.
If you use "ore" you want to sound "cool" and "very male" and it is rude anyway. To me personally "ore" sounds arrogant and if a guy uses "ore" when talking to me despite having just met each other I can kind of figure what kind of person he might be. Of course, you can find male characters saying "ore" in anime or mangas most of the time but it doesn't mean you should talk like them. I also don't use "atashi" because it sounds childish/girly to me and I prefer to use "watashi".
My husband, friends and my male co-workers never use "ore" (also in private) and they are all decent and very nice men I enjoy spending time with.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)Well, I agree that it sounds strange if a woman uses ore or even boku. In my experience it's extremely rare except in fictional or artistic cases, besides the occasional rough teenage tomboy. Strictly gendered society and all, I guess. But these things are also very regional - and I think most of the time people just say as their group says. As I said, in Tokyo most guys use ore, even kids. It doesn't have any rough or bad meaning. Sure, boku sounds a bit more refined but meh, a guy saying ore here is not indicative of their personality.

That's the point, I guess. If your male friends use it, you might start to use it too.
It all depends on your personal liking too I guess. I also remember a friend from 九州 who moved to Tokyo. She met a foreigner who used "ore" all the time and she told him "boku" would be better when talking to her.
I have to say I doubt it's a fact. Tokyo is a laaaaaarge city and I live near it ;D I don't think you know everybody.
Hmmm....are you Japanese btw? Japanese language for me is full of "indications". In Manga, you can see when someone's angry when they suddenly switch from polite language to rude language. Japanese people use polite Japanese to create a sudden distance to someone. Japanese judge other Japanese when they don't use correct Keigo, as well. You said yourself that boku sounds tomboyish, so why shouldn't ore sound arrogant?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)Man, this stuff sounds so strict and confusing. I'm glad my native language is "primitive" compared to Japanese.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 03:38 am (UTC)(link)Actually I'm speaking as, le gasp~~, another foreigner living in Japan, who used also to be a douche canoe just like you!

Then say it in proper Japanese. And please explain what I could have said to piss you off like that, honey.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)Thank you! But...
Calling strangers on the internet idiots just for the sake of insulting, ha this is so old. I don't think such a person would have the guts to tell me this straight to my face in real life anyway and it doesn't reach or hurt me.
(And no, I don't think I should believe everything what some anons say - some people just want to piss around because they have too much hate in their hearts or because they have nothing else to do. I can be Hulk Hogan when I become anon. And my real name is actually Chuck Norris. Just to let you know.)

Of course, lately, societal views might be changing, but there are also many grown men who use boku to convey that they are still learning and willing to change and adapt, like small children, to convey open-mindedness.
I think kioto is speaking from a traditional mindset.

My husband told me something similar.
Thanks for your input!

It makes a lot of sense.
Yeah, the words people choose to use for themselves can differ a lot based on who they're addressing/speaking in the company of, so that makes sense.

And that's the reason why I really dislike it when a guy uses "ore" although we just met - exceptions are older men.
I don't know if I can explain it well (and yeah I am not Japanese but you get a bit of "understanding" with time), but for me it's like this person doesn't give a crap about manners or being polite - it's like a German stranger using "du" instead of "Sie". And I think it says a bit about a person if the person doesn´t care about being polite or not.
Oh Japanese language why do you have to be so complicated...
