And here we go

Already with the Mary Sue posts? You know it's possible for a female character to be accomplished and not be a Mary Sue, right? We haven't even seen her in action yet.

Although I have been raging silently about every idiot classifying her as a Mary Sue because, wow, non-canon female, I'll play for the other team a moment.

She's supposed to have a love story and I think that is bothering people. That a female was injected in + love story. As if she could not come along and be awesome without having to have this romance attached to her. And I do find that irritating and pretty insulting. I don't think she is a Mary Sue, I think she'll kick ass but I honestly wish they had not pushed for a love story here. That is a little dampening. The only way to redeem it is if she doesn't go all movie!Eowyn and is Arwen-cool.

This is exactly my issue with it.

A female non-book canon female character? Ok, sure! If the first movie could devote as much time as it did to Radagast without bothering me, I'm all for seeing a kick ass elven woman injected into the movie.

Red Hair + "No we need to help the dwarves, you guys!" + Romantic subplot?

Pardon, but that's just really stereotypical and insulting, because yes: why can't she just be an amazing temporary ally the same way any male addition to the cast would be?

I'll see how she plays out, but turning her into a romantic, red-headed, dwarf loving elf just makes me feel less like she's there to further the story, and more like the avatar of media trends I despise and often feel insulted by.

I don't really mind the other things as much (I liked her a lot more in the trailer than I thought I would), but I could really do without a love story. Why does every fucking movie need to have a stupid love story? Ugh.

Oh, I see. I didn't think of that for some reason. d: I'm very, very sick of capable female characters dismissed as Mary Sues, almost as much as I'm sick of female characters being written purely to be Relationship Sues.

nayrt

yeah you just can't win either way, and sometimes i wish the term 'mary sue' would die

it's usually a distraction from the actual issues anyway

It could be because Tolkien is totally sexless, especially in The Hobbit, and such a sterile environment is not feasible for a blockbuster film now or ever.

Here comes everyone telling me how all the m/m subtext is sexual and why does there need to be a het romance to be sexual and blah blah blah. I'm just telling you what the movie execs are thinking.

As anon said above, I am not very keen on a romance story. I hate romance stories when they are canon (Arwen and Aragorn's storyline was so boring), so I am not very happy they are going to have a romance story for no reason.

Yeah, Aragorn/Arwen bored me so much. I like some romances, but I thought they had no chemistry, and I was way more interested in the war/ring quest. I'm not looking forward to seeing Tauriel's romance...
