People keep bringing up the whole romance thing. I think the only time I heard it mentioned is a comment by Aiden Turner. Has there been anything "official" official by PJ and co?

For all we know, the "romance" is going to be Fili having a one-sided crush on Tauriel.

If it's a one-sided crush, let's do this. But not what happened with Aragorn and Eowyn. That was the height of uncomfortable and I'm pretty sure, if my memory is right, that it was because of how it was scripted.

I always thought it was because Eowyn was miscast. Miranda Otto's character is just too earthy for me.

I didn't have issues with her looks much. I just found her so puppy-dog-in-love and letting that dictate her when she was also supposed to be a strong shieldmaiden type.

I think she looked the part, but her character was so off to me. Just... I have a very specific understanding of Eowyn, and not only did the strong shieldmaiden not come through but they didn't get anything of her coldness and hopelessness either. Where's the fatalism, the fact that she was driven to war not by amazon heroics but by a death wish? Everything fell so flat, especially that fight with the Witch-King.

Well, the writing virtually ignored what Tolkien, though Gandalf and Aragorn, very specifically states is the *real* issue that drove her to despair, not her love for an idealised Aragorn, and made her character basically all unrequited love and "I wanna fight!"

I will give Miranda Otto kudos for a) criticising some elements, such as the cringe-worthy stew scene in the TTT EE and b) actually getting into the sword fighting, in light of the reports that Liv Tyler would stop five minutes into training, complaining that her hand hurt.

Well, I'd give Liv props for ixnaying that idea they had of Arwen fighting at Helm's Deep. Maybe she just didn't want to do even more swordsfighting practice, but somehow I can't imagine that going over too well.
