IA.One one hand,it's the author's fic and they can do/write anything they want, but on the other,I've seen it so many times it's grating on my nerves.

I think you have no soul. "Chocolate orbs met emerald ones" is an exalted staple of the prose of romance for a reason. Also:

I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful—a faery’s child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her orbs were cerulean.

Do you really think you know better than Keats? Kids these days.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's an overuse sort of thing. You can only see "the depths of his cerulean orbs" so many times before you start wanting to shout, "USE A GODDAMN THESAURUS, FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK."

And I'm sick of people complaining about the use of orbs for eyes. It is a metaphor, which is a legitimate writing tool. It has been used for a long time, including by writers with more skill than I bet anyone who is complaining about it has.

Thanks to Buffy season 6, when I hear "orbs" I think "testicles". So, there's that...

My orbs are rolling right now.

Seriously.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
In my particular corner of fandom there were these technically competent writers who overused the fuck out of this term. If I see it in fic, it signifies "bad fic" to me.

Chocolate orbs. Azure orbs. Orbs the color of the sky during a forest fire after a rain storm.

*shudders*

[Picture is a close up of the eyes of the character Jack Frost from the CGI animated film "Rise of the Guardians".]

I am so sick of fics calling eyes 'orbs.' It doesn't even look like a word anymore and just feels so awkward in a story. Plus it sounds weird now. Try it. ORBS. Orbs orbs orbs.

At this point I only notice it if the rest of the fic is bad or if it doesn't fit with the writing.

I would think if you're writing so much about a character's eyes that the word "eyes" becomes stale/repetitive, the problem is not in your word choice but in how you are draping the scene.

not gonna lie, i super dislike this word now just because i read a series of bad fics (mostly because the subject matter was so weird to me i had to keep reading...?) and EVERY OTHER WORD was "orbs"

every time i see it now i just think of those fics and shudder.

"Look...at...me..." he [Snape] whispered. The green orbs found the black (orbs), but after a second, something in the depths of the dark (orbs) seemed to vanish... (orbs)"

Orbs.

so basically what i am getting from this thread is that people are giant babies who can't even stand to see a pairing they don't like mentioned in a fic.

am i right? because i had always been under the assumption that "gen" meant a fic where the relationships were not the focus of the fic. it didn't mean no relationships whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, back when I was rping on forums they actually out-right banned that kind of writing because it was over-used at taken to ridiculous extremes ["She slowly floated towards the attractive male, her cerulean orbs dragging down his body, admiring his well-built chassis and pillars*."] So...yeah. I got trained to never use that when writing very early on, and I agree it can get to be way too much when used constantly.

*Basically, his body and legs

Oh my God, me too. It's gotten to the point where if I see it in fic, I have two options: grit my teeth and put up with this one wretched flaw for a decent story, or if it's really not that good to begin with, it's a dealbreaker.

[personal profile] juujuubee 2013-06-23 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in utter agreement. Eyes should not be orbs. Lips should not be tiers. And I won't even go into bad horrible words for nether-regions.
