I feel exactly the same way, OP. It's just a really fun musical, religious elements aside. I'm particularly fond of Elvis!Pharaoh.

Elvis!Pharaoh is fantastic. I also love the brothers' ensemble songs, especially "One More Angel in Heaven," "Those Canaan Days" and "Benjamin Calypso."

"Those Canaan Days" is absolutely amazing.

Elvis!Pharaooooh! We went to see Joseph live when I was about twelve I think, with my school, and we were waiting in the bus to leave after and the guy who had played the Pharaoh went past us, and we all leaned out the windows all, "O HAI PHARAOH!! :DD" and he waved to us, it was like the highlight of our trip.

What are pasties? Sorry I just read your secret and am terribly confused. I'm pronouncing it pah-stees and where I come from they're Image

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-06-22 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Pasties, in American English (and maybe some other places, I'm not sure) are little round scraps of fabric or other material used to cover one's nipples when your breasts are otherwise exposed.

That makes so much more sense. In the British Isles, these are pasties:

I'm not religious at all and I LOVE Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Followed closely by my love for Jesus Christ Superstar. It's okay. Good musicals are good musicals. I'm sure there are a ton of people who really loved The Book of Mormon who are most definitely not mormon - heck the creators aren't even mormon!

The Book of Mormon musical was making fun of Mormonism... so that doesn't really fit in the same category as Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not really. I've seen a few interviews with the writers and they always talk about how they really wanted to approach it with respect as well as humor, and that it can be seen as more a celebration of absurdity. They also talk about how a lot of Mormons actually really enjoy the show and get a kick out of it and how accurate some jokes are.

I love them, too, but I don't think Jesus Christ Superstar is religious either for that matter. If anything, it's anti-religious? It is the telling of Jesus as a man, and is basically about how he flips out, snaps at his followers and is possibly delusional. And it's main focus is showing sympathy for Judas. Great musical, though.

I've never seen that, but I don't think there is anything wrong with enjoying religious stuff if you don't follow the religion. I think the whole thing is an odd concept to be honest. What about all the stuff based on other religions? All kinds of people enjoy those without following the religions they are based on all the time. Why should stuff based on Christianity be any different?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not Christian either (or Jewish), but I love 'Close Every Door To Me'. I just love things about people finding an internal integrity in the face of torment, whatever the source of that integrity, and that song is basically that distilled.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It was
Red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ochre and peach and ruby and olive and violet and fawn and lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve and cream and crimson and silver and rose and azure and lemon and russet and grey and pruple and white and pink and orange and blue...

... I think. I was in the children choir in a school production iof this when I was little and no matter ehich parts of the lyrics I forget, this I will always remember.

And it's such pointless information, too!

[Picture is the logotype or cover picture of "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".]

I'm pagan, and happy to be. I still love the hell out of the DVD version of this musical. Cheeziness and all. It's just so happy!

Feels awkward now, not just for it being a religious-based musical, but for the way it treats its female cast. (The women's costumes, oh holy crap. Pasties and a G-string are not kid-appropriate!)

...Still want to be the Narrator anyway - and want her costume.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Women in Ancient Egypt didn't give a shit about bras and slaves, male or female, oftentimes didn't wear clothes at all. I'd say the lack of cloth is one of the few historically accurate things about this musical ;)

(I also love it)

I've only seen a reduced middle school version, which was less than impressive. A lot of narration with people moving around on stage. I've heard some of the music, though, and it's pretty good.

Hey, ya like what ya like. Chistopher Moore's Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal wasn't supposed to appeal to Christians(etc) but apparently the higher-ups in the sects enjoyed it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom is a diehard atheist and loves this. It's just a fun musical.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
As a pagan, I feel the same way about Godspell.

So I can get where you're coming from, Anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, except I'm atheist. Sometimes I feel a bit awkward singing "Prepare Ye the way of the Lord" but then I remember it's good music and IDGAF :)

I am not religious at all, and I fucking love the shit out of the Glenn Carter and Jerome Pradon version of Jesus Christ Superstar.

I wanted to see the revival, because I love Mel C. But I fucking HATE Tim Minchin, and refuse to pay AUD$120 to see him butcher my favourite character.

*grabs you and gives you a huge hug*

I love that one, too and it drives me a little mad when I see people hating on it. (Especially when they reference 'the original' and clearly mean Norman Jewison's movie.)

It just so perfectly matches what I see when I listen to the album. (And Pradon sounds strikingly similar to Murray Head to my ear.)

I feel the same way about Prince of Egypt. :)

Though, even though I'm Pagan, I do believe there is a grain of truth to all religions in some way. They all had to start from somewhere and most of them have something good to take from them.

If it's wrong to be pagan and love Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, or Jesus Christ Superstar (srsly, have songs on my iPod because of win), then screw it, let's just chalk this up to one more thing in my life that I do wrong. lol.
