Re: How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom
(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)Also, while we're on the subject: people we call "architects" are actually "architectural engineers," because minus the engineering part, it's practically an art degree, and that's usually not what people are referring to.
Re: How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom
(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 02:01 am (UTC)(link)B.A. in Sculpture, M. Arch; worked as a sculptor, set designer/fabricator, graphic designer; currently preparing for the ARE and making art in my free time. Is there a lot of crossover between art and architecture? Absolutely. Saying they're "practically" the same is, frankly, misleading and a bit condescending to both. The "artistic" professions usually only look alike to people who don't spend much time with those who work in the fields. :)
I agree about engineering underrepresentation in media though - and exaggeration of what engineers can do. Design a fully-functional Impossible Technology reverse-engineered from alien spaceships and composed of dangerous and/or highly expensive materials? Sure, I'll have it by this afternoon! Not.
