How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom

Re: How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom
But what I find interesting, is the extent to which the media creates a mythology that feds buy into and try to exert themselves, so no a lot of it is wrong, especially the technical stuff, but a large amount is spot on and moreover if it isn't true it starts to become relevant simply because it's been portrayed that way.
Though I was re-reading Virtual Light recently and was impressed with the accuracy there, a lot of nice small touches that rung true.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)Also, while we're on the subject: people we call "architects" are actually "architectural engineers," because minus the engineering part, it's practically an art degree, and that's usually not what people are referring to.

I don't think it's actually featured by itself as just "programming" that much. Pretty much every time it gets brought it gets brought up with hacking, which - even though I'm not as knowledgeable on that specific side of things - is still laughable. I mean, viruses aside, I'm not sure I've ever seen two of the most common hacking methods (phishing and SQL injection) featured as a legitimate way to go about things.
Cat Street handled it pretty well. At one point the main programmer's computer gets unplugged and he gets mad at losing hours and hours of work which was kind of just like "you did not save at ALL during these past several hours? how were you compiling and testing your code? don't tell me you were typing for hours without ANY tests in between because that shit is guaranteed to have at least one overlooked bug. control+s and multiple copies. if you're really as awesome as this comic makes you out to be, they should be your friend by now." But later he cooled down and admitted to the main character that he'd been stupid for not doing all of the above, so I forgave that.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)Counsellor/psychotherapist, and every movie representing it is embarrassingly wrong. The therapist in The Departed made me cringe. Sopranos was awfully wrong. Honestly, all movie therapists are terrible. It makes me curl up and die every time I see them. Is that how people think we work???
I get that often movie/TV show therapists have to be either a) overemotional in order to get involved with the protagonist or b) cold and distant to extent a stereotype. But it drives me fucking nuts. A good therapist is warm but challenging, providing an inspiring platform from which to jump beyond yourself. They are supportive but not insipid. Objective and fair but not cold and removed.
Fuck you, movie therapists!

The job I will end up is as far as I know not portraid a lot in media, and when it is it would be accurate as I study Film and Television, the exception is if I end up as a Film/Tv Prof.
Re: How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom
they probably don't because the job itself is really boring to look at, the machinery is loud, and yeah.
Re: How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom
And um - usually pretty wrong, heh. I don't spend all my time cleaning and running around after my kid and cooking/baking/going to book clubs. I *also* do not spend all my time in a housecoat and slippers, smoking on the couch and watching 'Days of our Lives'.
My SO is a tattoo artist. Wrong, wrong, always so wrong, though at least they mostly have them wearing gloves, now. But seriously - wrong. (And they never mention the jobs *i've* had at tattoo shops, which is manning the front/dealing with customers/taking care of the day-to-day of the shop, *or* the job of building needle groups, cleaning up stations, sterilizing stuff, setting stations up.....)
*deleted and put in its proper place*

Except.
That episode of Hannibal where they had a floater pharmacist serial killer who was sending people into diabetic comas by fucking with their insulin meds, then turning them into living mushroom gardens. I've seen some truly weird (and shitty) floater pharmacists in my time, but it made me uncomfortable to see it put together like that.
I think there was also an ep of Criminal minds that had a pharmacy in it, but I can't recall how it was represented.

Re: How frequently is your job represented in media or fandom
So 'not at all.' I can't think of many more major character examples, but people use 'translator' and 'linguist' interchangeably all the damn time.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)Okay, fine. I never fight Nazis.
Actual archaeology is intellectually fascinating (and field work is great exercise) but it's very, very boring to watch if you can't participate. THRILL AS THEY STRAIGHTEN THE WALLS OF THEIR EXCAVATION UNIT! GASP AS THEY COUNT THE NUMBER OF DEER BONE FRAGMENTS THAT CAME OUT OF THIS LEVEL. Also, the kind of archaeology I do - private sector working almost exclusively for government contracts and usually doing more survey than actual excavation - is pretty much never represented.
