Not job yet, but I...uh...most of the time when a character is described as a linguist it's because they speak a bunch of languages and do translation work and I want to slam my head into a desk. 'Translator' is the word they're looking for, but apparently 'linguist' sounds nicer even though it's not the same thing. Stargate was weird about this, Daniel Jackson spoke a lot of languages and sometimes they called him a translator and other times a linguist--and he did do grammar work and linguistic things occasionally, I would just personally bill him as a translator since that was 99% of what he did in the language area.

So 'not at all.' I can't think of many more major character examples, but people use 'translator' and 'linguist' interchangeably all the damn time.

LOL, I just posted down-thread about translators and how, the few times they're in the media [that I see] they're mostly nameless background characters.

Jackson's work actually falls under interpretation more than translation since what he's doing is more 'Well, what they're saying is roughly X', and he normally doesn't have the time or resources to make a completely accurate change over between the languages. Plus translation is almost always done with recorded or written work since it takes far more legwork to do translation that interpretation.

Which...I'm sure you already know, it just irritates me when people use the terms interchangeably [and yes I know. Stupid thing.]
