What? When did this become a thing?

In my days GEN just meant the plot is the focus and all the canon (or non canon) romantic relationships were in the background. It didn't mean no one has no relationship ever.

Yeah, I'm with you. I read a lot of fics back when I was more active in fandom that mentioned pairings, or that implied that two people were together, but were still considered gen due to their focus.

This times a million. This is how it's been done most places on the internet since I first got involved in online fandom in 1995 and it's what I'm going to stick with because it makes sense.

+1

Been in fandom since the mid-90s myself and this is how I've always seen it used.

Yup, that's how it's always been for me too. And I'm a Gen fan. This no romantic relationship whatever thing some people are talking about must be new.

With you, anon.

OMG! You took the words out of my mouth. I would consider a lot of fics I read Gen. If the focus isn't the pairing but the pairing exists it shouldn't be ignored.

It's like watching a movie like "The Avengers" there are a few pairings in there - specifically Tony/Pepper and others hinted at. But the point of the story isn't the relationship but the "Save the World" plot. The warning for the pairings is, in my opinion, warning for people who hate certain pairings and won't consider them under any circumstances even if they are canon.

People don't get that you can have pairings and not have the story be romantic. For me the Multi tab is indicating that there are relationships of both het and slash that are going to be taking center stage. However if I see Gen with that too, I tend to interpret it that the romance is important to the plot but not the driving focus of said plot.

Ultimately I'll look more at the summary than the tags as an indicator.

Same here. Gen just means that romance doesn't play an integral part in the plot. It doesn't mean that no relationships are allowed ever, even in the background. I find the distinction people make between canon and non-canon background pairings and whether or not their inclusion means something counts as gen really weird, too.

THIS.

If JKR posted CoS as fanfic, it doesn't go under Molly/Arthur, just because there are scenes at the burrow, where they are obviously married.

This. Using Half Blood Prince as here as an example: Harry/Ginny becomes a part of canon quite nicely (ick), but the main portion of the story IS NOT romance. It would essentially be considered gen fic. but it'd most likely be labeled fantasy, action, or whatever.

THIS. I like how it's suddenly "don't you people understand what gen means?" when they're the ones who apparently applied a new meaning and get annoyed when everyone else doesn't follow it.

Oh thank god I thought I was going crazy with all these other people talking about how gen means no romance allowed period, I was getting worried I may have had the definition of GEN wrong all these years.

More on topic, I understand that some people have different level of tolerances for how much romance they will put up with in a story, but some gen writers and fans just seem like they are trying way to hard to eliminate the concept of romance from their story entirely, and all the characters end up suffering for it. It's hard for me to take a fic seriously if the author is so averse to intimate interaction, that all the characters come off as professional business associates, rather than friends, family, or even canon couples. A canon couple should be able to have an affectionate scene or two (i.e. hugging, kissing, etc.) especially if it is in character, and the fic should still count as gen.

Seriously, this. Gen is a story that focuses on plot and thus keeps romance in the background, not something with no pairing allowed ever.

Ditto. I've never heard of this def until now. How moronic. I guess CSI and other shows of it's ilk are now romance shows instead of criminal investigative shows b/c oh, noes, they've characters in romantic relationships that aren't the focus of the show!!!!!!!
