wasn't she addicted to diet pills... those can be pretty dangerous when abused, op.

(and back then, many brands of over-the-counter diet pills had speed in them; kids becoming addicted to otc diet pills is the primary reason they were reformulated, dexatrim being an example.)

Yeah, just the lack of sleep alone is harmful. People should realize that even OTC medications have the potential to cause serious damage if not used correctly. That's why it's called "drug abuse", and that's not only limited to illegal drugs.

I sound like one of those "the more you know" commercials heh

Caffeine addiction is real, and long-term sleep deprivation can cause problems -- but neither of those issues was portrayed in the episode in question. It was cheap and unrealistic in that it both failed to tackle what would actually have been going on and it equated one problem (or possibly two problems) with an altogether different one.

It's also a 30-minute show -- which means an absolute max of 25 minutes show-time. Did you really expect Saved by the Bell to pull out a multi-episode arc about Jessie's drug habit? It's not that kind of show.

Naaah. I just think they shouldn't have done it at all, because it's a failure any way you slice it.

For teens and adults? Sure. For the 9-10 year olds watching? Not likely. (And let's be real, the show may feature high school kids, but it's not a show built for high-schoolers.)

I unironically like this episode. I think it would have been a genuinely good story if she had been addicted to a legitimately dangerous actual drug.

Any kind of stimulant can be really bad for your heart in large doses though

seriously. even if it's not something "illegal," caffeine pills in large doses can screw your body up and even throw your heart out of rhythm, cause anxiety, sweats, etc. Sure, it's a super cheesy episode, but I always looked as it as a "OTC drugs aren't as safe as you think if taken in large doses" message to the age demographic that usually watched the show. Hell, even vitamins can be dangerous in large doses. It might not be an illegal drug, but caffeine overdoses have been reported, especially in teens looking to stay up to study/do sports/ afterschool activities. Some have even died due to cardiac failure.
