I have played at least one game from every single generation in the series - Blue, Yellow, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, FireRed, SoulSilver, Diamond, White, White II - and I personally thought that R/S/E were by far the worst games in the series. It had no feeling. I don't know how to describe it.

Incidentally, if this lend my opinion any street cred, I run a Tumblr called AlternativePokemonArt. THAT'S how much I love Pokemon. So yes, I'm still amazed by the complexity of B/BII, AND I've played Ruby.

Can you explain what makes BW/B2W2 amazingly complex in your eyes? I've seen this opinion many times and it baffles me but I've never gotten a chance to get some more detailed reasoning for it.

... I'm mostly talking about the anime adaptation, which differs a lot, but still!

I'm someone else, but in my opinion? It's because N's story hit so close to home for me. I find him incredibly sympathetic and well-written: I like how each version of him is different based on how badly he's caught up in Ghetsis' deceptions (the PokeSupe manga N is worst, game N is in-between, and anime N has been running from him for two years when he's first introduced).

I love his character and that of his sisters (well, in the anime, where they're fleshed out more). I love that their story line is about unlearning Ghetsis' lies, because even though they might recognize that he was twisting the truth and giving them a very limited view of reality (focusing solely on abusive trainers and never bringing up how many compassionate trainers there are out there or how many people fight against that injustice and save/take in abandoned Pokemon like Ash does), they can't just change their worldview in a single day.

I just found the story of isolation and mistrust very relatable, (N's sisters asking if it's true that there really are people out there who aren't abusive as if it's the most unbelievable thing... I don't know, it just felt real), how N still tries to excuse some of the things Ghetsis did (like, oh, no, it wasn't that bad, I wasn't lonely, even though I was locked up in a single room for most of my life with limited human contact), and the hopeful ending where they head out to learn about the world on their own.

And even though N's a victim and tries to be a hero, he's... really messed-up in his extremism (he pretty much wants to let a bunch of kindergartners stay trapped in a burning building than rescue them, because he doesn't want Pokemon to come to harm in one episode).

And I didn't think it was wishy-washy, the existence of abusive and neglectful Pokemon trainers was acknowledged, but good trainers like Ash try to save Pokemon from situations like that. The world isn't perfect, but it isn't as bad as Ghetsis made it out to be.

I don't know, I just really liked it. ;^;

Yeah, this mostly flew over my head because I don't watch the show, but it sounds kinda neat, might actually check out those episodes. I wouldn't have expected the anime to tackle something that much better than the games.

It's really good and short too! The Episode N arc is only 14 episodes long (I don't count the first episode of it because N only has a cameo appearance at the very end and the majority of the episode is filler spent helping a random, new trainer start her journey).

My favourite episode of the arc has just been dubbed recently (they're still at the start of it), it's the one where N's sisters are properly introduced and they delve into his backstory. I recommend watching this arc. ^^

Also, Colress/Achroma is incredibly entertaining in the anime, while being a legitimate threat.
