Other than a vague theme of eco-terrorism, I can't really see what they have in common.

Well. I played both. And I felt B&W had the better plot? Platinum was probably better than all of them to me, though. Something about Cyrus actually rung more of a creepy villain.

On the other hand, I will agree that the RSE villains were just as much nutty environment whackjobs as Team Plasma were nutty PETA whackjobs. It's just that the things the former set does should do far more damage to themselves than everyone else usually, like whenever they fuck around with that volcano.

I honestly haven't payed the least bit of attention to the game plots since GSC. Whoops.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
They're only attempts at the same plot insofar as all Pokemon games have the same plot.

Honestly, thinking BW's plot is "complex" is a result of the intellectual starvation from being a longtime Pokemon fan, and I say that as a longtime Pokemon fan. None of the games have ever had plots that are good or complex without the massive "(for Pokemon)" disclaimer, and they probably never will. \/o\/

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
...Pretty much. I'm just looking at this secret and going "people pay attention to the plot?"

It's all just X whackjob team trying to gain Y legendary pokemon for Z reason.

I can't even remember what bogus excuse/power trip R/S/E's villains were on.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Diamond & Pearl were complex, (Platinum especially) but I think Black/White and their sequels really hit home.

I mean your whole life the game tells you "It's all in good fun, nobody ever REALLY gets hurt, Pokemon & People have lived and worked together forever!" and suddenly some jerks show up saying that if we REALLY loved them, we'd let them go...?

Still, I kind of see where you're coming from.

Wow, someone's feeling pretty high and mighty just because they played one of the older games. I have been playing the games since red and blue came out, and honestly? Every game has it's unique ups and downs, and while playing all of them has given me a better insight on the games as a whole, it doesn't give me the right to judge anyone else's opinion as invalid.

I'm not going to lie, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald fell a little flat for me plot-wise, but then again, most of the Pokemon games leave a lot to be desired as far as plots go. B/W just made gym leaders and side characters more involved, which was something pretty new. It's a step in the right direction, but IMO the core part of what makes the game fun is the team building and coming up with strategies.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah. Implying hipster plays anything post gen 1, OP.

That aside, I have played both. Don't play Emerald, though, so I don't know what the added storyline in R/S/E there but from what I've seen, B/W easily trumps any other main Pokemon games storyline since you exactly don't expect so much from the story. Sure as a story in a game itself it's still pretty lackluster, but we haven't seen anyone like N before in the past gen. Nor have seen gym leaders that do something directly involved in the main storyline. And nor have we met a final boss like Ghetsis (most of us would have thought that we would fight Alder?). When brought down to it, sure, every main pokemon games have the same storyline (evil pokemon organisation striving to rule the world), but it's all in the details and the execution. And, IMO, B/W is the best there. If anything, this is the first gen where I actually care about the story and the characters.

Steven Stone is still all time my favourite Champion, though, if not favourite character!

I loved RSE but this secret is sort of stupid.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-28 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cover of the boxes of the Pokémon videogames versions White, Black, Ruby and Sapphire.]

To this day I'm still completely underwhelmed by the plot of Black and White and think that Ruby and Sapphire did it first and did it better.

Bonus hipster secret: I bet half the people so amazed by the "complexities" of Black and White didn't even play Ruby and Sapphire.

Plying Emerald. Played White. Love them both. Still prefer White over Emerald.

Eat that, OP.

...Black and White isn't a hipster thing. The typical hipster only likes the first generation (MAYBE the second) and hates all the new Pokémon.

And as someone who's been into Pokémon since the beginning, I think RSE had the lamest plot. Black and White wasn't exactly complex as far as video game plotlines go, but it was at least easier to buy than "random guys trying to expand/shrink the ocean to give fish/people more room to live." You are free to like it more for whatever reason, but... don't act like anyone who likes BW better only thinks so because they're not familiar with the rest of the series.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
eh, RS is still my favourite both game and story-wise. But BW's story was a lot more complex and layered. There's no shame in that, especially considering they're all along the lines of "save the pokemon world" XD

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I have played at least one game from every single generation in the series - Blue, Yellow, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, FireRed, SoulSilver, Diamond, White, White II - and I personally thought that R/S/E were by far the worst games in the series. It had no feeling. I don't know how to describe it.

Incidentally, if this lend my opinion any street cred, I run a Tumblr called AlternativePokemonArt. THAT'S how much I love Pokemon. So yes, I'm still amazed by the complexity of B/BII, AND I've played Ruby.

Can you explain what makes BW/B2W2 amazingly complex in your eyes? I've seen this opinion many times and it baffles me but I've never gotten a chance to get some more detailed reasoning for it.

You know how pica makes people crave inedible objects because their bodies get stupid and think the nutrients they need are in chalk and drywall instead of food? That's what you have when you look for - and, worse, actually see - a complex plot in a Pokemon game.

This is the same disorder suffered by the people who desperately want to believe Pinkie Pie is a bipolar axe murderer and that the other ponies are nailing each other. I think we need a name for it.

So, people can only enjoy things if they're highbrow enough for you?

Seriously, some people enjoy light-hearted, simple stories.

Personally? I love things that don't take themselves too seriously. I feel like taking stories seriously is my job as a fan. A lot of more intentionally serious works just make me roll my eyes.

Let people have their fun!

I don't know the plot of B&W, tried playing them but I hated most of the new pokemon, so I stopped around the 4th town. I was intrigued by N, though.

As for R/S/E, I absolutely loved them when they came out and still love them today. I sort of remember the plot, but honestly, I don't play the Pokemon games for the plot... I play them for the pokemon and because they're fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Between 3rd and 5th generation, I liked B/W's plot and character development better in general, but R/S/E had Wally, had less "OMG POKEMON ARE GODS" going on, had more interesting intra-regional terrain diversity, and didn't get ruined by sequels (BW2 kind of fell flat for me, though was mechanically better).

On the other hand, I have never, in years and years of trying and giving up, got to beat the Mossdeep Twin Leaders, so I never really got to finish the plot of any of the Hoenn games. B/W's experience mechanics might have been brutal, but it was still possible to actually win the damn games...

Overall, though, I'm a diehard Sinnoh fangirl. 4TH GEN FTW

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Same anon, I just realized how hypocritical it is to blast Gen 5 for using "Pokemon as gods" and then cite the Sinnoh games as my favorite.

I've played them all and I think the way the story was handled in BW blew everything else out of the water. I do wish people would back off RSE a little though because those games were great.
