I'm not a kinkster in Real Life, but I can read kink -- but only if it's nonconsensual. I grew up in a very repressed, religious environment, so when I was younger, I thought kink was bad. I can't have my protagonist -- a good person -- be into kink. Therefore, the only way I can read it is if it's being forced onto him or her. Of course, I know rationally that kink is fine and good and that there's nothing wrong with it. But I still feel pretty guilty.

Okay... well, um. Here's the thing...

If you're talking about BDSM related kink here... consent is what makes it kink. Otherwise, it's abuse. There is no such thing as non-con BDSM because once someone doesn't want to be involved, it's just somebody beating on, spanking, whipping, raping someone else.

Seconding this very, very hard.

I was raped by someone who claimed afterward that it was "accidental" BDSM. One of the most important parts of recovery was being able to admit to myself that NO, he did not have my consent, we did not discuss it in advance, we had no agreement to "consensual non-consent"—it was NOT BDSM.

Real BDSM is very careful to be sure that consent is present and no one is forced into something they don't want. That's the entire point. It's not supposed to be a handy linguistic cover for actual rape and abuse.

Consent is what makes it BDSM, not what makes it kink. At least as I understand it, BDSM is a framework developed to engage in a particular set of kinks without it being abuse. Kink can be nonconsensual, as can sex--at which point it's awful and abusive, but its entire definition doesn't depend on consent like BDSM does.

There's also sorta the question of how stories and fantasies about abusive, nonconsensual kink and/or sex, when exchanged consensually and with mutual understanding that the events of the story are Not Okay outside fantasyland, fit into "what is BDSM?" Like... okay, we're all on the same page that the stuff depicted within the story is not BDSM, not any sort of way to do kink in real life, and not okay. But it's still the raw fuel of a lot of people's fantasies and power-related kinks, and I get really annoyed with the mindset of "this story has nothing to do with BDSM"/"this is Wrong and anyone who faps to it is sick" on fics that don't have a "but it was all a pre-negotiated roleplay!" framing device.

I've heard of this phenomenon, and many people go through this, especially women :(

The stigma associated with a woman even having a desire to initiate sex (or God forbid have any specific preferences) is what leads to many women to fantasize about rape, because it would be a less stigmatizing experience.

I also read a study once describing the same thing happening to homosexual men because homosexuality was/is viewed as a great big scary taboo (just look at what's happening in Russia).
