Reminds me of the Ranma 1/2 fandom. Fantasy comedies tend to get pretty bleak when you stop laughing at them.

True! But one of the reasons that I love all these comedies fandoms.

I love all these wonderful fluffy WOWP fics but I seriously adore all these dark and angsty fics. Also Jalex will be forever an OTP for me. <3

watched this show years ago so no clue... anyone want to enlighten who is who in the descriptions?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The left guy is Max, the youngest child, who is the one with apathy. The girl is Alex who is the one with sociopathy and the last one is Justin, the oldest boy and the one with obsessive insanity. Justin and Alex have many scenes with more text than subtext. Too bad that there are brother and sister.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I never noticed the subtext, but I never do with brothers and sisters so that must be it. XD Thanks for explaining.

I remember learning about the premise of the show and thinking it was actually really fucked-up.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I wondered how the parents could bear to have more than one child. Not because living without magic is terrible, but having it and then losing it? That could really fuck someone up, especially since it's forced competition between siblings...

i might need to marathon this show, damn

[Picture is Max, Alex and Justin Russo, characters of the TV show "Wizards of Waverly Place", standing behind the logotype of the series. There is lightning around them. Justin is the older teenager brother, Max is the youngest pre-teen brother and Alex, their sister, is in-between the two in ages.]

What's intended: Goofy but fun kid's show featuring sibling rivalry and tongue-in-cheek tropes and plots.

What I see: Crapsack World saddled with bigoted, sadistic, The Giver-worthy laws that tore apart a family and turned the three siblings against each other until they were respectively driven to obsessive insanity, near-villainous sociopathy, and mentally regressive apathy, with bonus incestuous overtones for the first two.

I know my way is humorless and pretentious, but it yields so much more (and better) fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember catching a few episodes and thinking some of the plots and worldbuilding was actually pretty fucked up when you stopped and thought about it beyond the obvious joke.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know nothing about this fandom, but pretentious it might be, deconstructions have always been my catnip. I love them sooooo much.

Just like how I thought, while watching Monsters Inc./University, that if doors are activated to the monster world via scream, what happens when someone screams in fear just because reasons? Not on purpose, say...somebody's being murdered in the room, and somebody bolts into the closet and finds themselves in the monster world?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Monsters University yet, but from what I remember of Monsters Inc. the door had to be in that machine to be activated. The metal bars that would lock in place around it and then the light would turn on? I figured that unless the door was in there and keyed to open then it wouldn't open.

What I wanted/want to know is how they get the copies of the door. Like, when a kid is born and gets a room does a door magically link to the monster world? That seems bizarre.

I hated this show from when i first realized how the world worked. You can have magic...but then you can't! And you'll have to watch with bitter envy as one of your siblings has it all and you get turned back into a mundane.

Really just..icky.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and it felt weird to because I don't think they ever gave a good reason why they did it. Like, is there only a limited supply of magic or something?

Hell, I think I remember an episode where Alex makes a mannequin come to life to pretend to be her date and when the mannequin started feelings emotions due to the spell she made it into a mannequin again. Twice, I think actually, with another mannequin. It always felt off to me, even as a kid, because it seemed like she was effectively killing someone but it's never really brought up.

I was totally into it for the Alex/Justin incest.

But yeah when you start to think more seriously about how their world works it's all kinds of fucked up.

[personal profile] electromouse 2013-06-30 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Rofl yeah, the whole world building was so weird, and the whole "there can only be one" thing was so weird for me. Like why the hell would you do that?

Also I'm not into incest, but damn Alex and Justin where really hard not to ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen the show, but does anyone have any links to meta discussions similar to OP's interpretation?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I never liked this show. Every time I watched it, the episodes always seem to focus on 'look how quirky Alex is!' or it was all about how she tried her best to purely get her way all the time. Not to mention all the times she screwed over her brothers (mainly Justin), either in order to get her way or just because.

That and when the show basically began to state that Alex was going to be the one to keep her magic, I just gave up. Aside from the fact that their world is screwed up, she's the one that misuses magic the most or uses it in the most vain purposes or causes the most accidents because she ignored their Father's warnings about certain spells. Again, this is all mostly because she was determined to get her own way, whereas her brothers were either trying to learn magic responsibly (Justin) or just didn't really care (Max).

And yet she's the one that's going to keep her powers? Yeah, no thanks. I'm gonna go watch something with actual good plots and setup.

For the longest time, I thought she was supposed to be leaning on the sign, and it was just a terrible photoshop job. It's really bugging me, now, that it wasn't the intention.

I really thought that the end result would be everyone getting magic and realizing it was wrong to have one person with it and one person without (or two in some cases) and they even almost went that route, but then the finale was just a quiz show and yeah... it was pretty depressing when you think about it.
