Depends how likely the character is to just run into the Supernatural if they aren't actively involved in it. If the Supernatural is relatively rare, it might be safer for them to not draw attention to themselves by getting involved. If the Supernatural is going to be really close by anyway, its probably safer to know.

Also, you have to filter this through the characters "in the know"'s perspective.

I've hardly ever come across storylines where the police are rarely involved if they're mentioned as main-ish characters. I'm sorry I didn't take that into consideration. I guess it's true that the possibility it's safe for them exists if the supernatural is a rare thing they never come into contact with. I haven't seen it but I concede that can totally happen.

Yeah, I've generally never seen that done convincingly in a way that didn't make me think the character was stupid. Like with Stiles? He toes the line for me. While I've always known his dad is a huge blind spot for him if things get worse I'm going to really start questioning his ability to think about things in any logical fashion.

(Speaking only about causes where the supernatural poses a constant danger.) I don't know. I just think about how I would deal with it if I were in their shoes and I don't know if I could live with the guilt of knowing I inadvertently caused a loved one’s death all because I wasn't willing to let them know how to properly take care of themselves. I guess I've always been the person to never truly believe ignorance is bliss.

Thing is, for Stiles, his Dad's probably going to get *even more* involved if he finds out about werewolves. So from Stiles perspective his Dad is already in danger and might be put in *even more* danger by knowing. Informing his Dad might make it possible for them to arm him with Wolfsbane bullets (or whatever weapon), but that's offset by the increased involvement and thus increased contact.

I, personally, think that his Dad would be better off knowing, but I can see why Stiles (who almost certainly *isn't* thinking clearly on this subject) might not be able to come to that conclusion.

Also, it involves convincing one of the werewolves to demonstrate, so he'd have to "out" someone to his Dad - with little/no guarantee that his Dad wouldn't react very badly.

I understand that, which is why I said he toes the line and that I would only start thinking him stupid if things started to escalate. (Which they inevitably will.) Because the problem is, I feel by the end of this Stiles's dad is supposed to protect Stiles. He's the father and if Stiles died because of a threat the Sheriff should have known about the loss will kill him. (Metaphorically.) On top of that, the man is already involved. I can only see him getting more involved whether he knows about the threat or not. There comes a point where it turns from protecting someone from increased involvement and actively putting an unsuspecting person in harm's way and in law enforcement that point comes up far more quickly than it does for others.

This is, of course, just my personal opinion on it and I've already previously stated here on F!S how I have issues with the show's writing. I find it flawed and the fact that it tackles this trope does not endear me to it because I find it doesn't create the necessary balance between danger and safety of knowledge/ignorance well.

And, yeah, I get that Stiles isn't thinking clearly on this topic. It's why I've given him so much leeway, actually. I understand love makes you blind to things. The thing is, there's only so far I'm willing to go before I think that's no longer an excuse. Granted, I also don't think being stupid is a bad thing. People make stupid decisions all the time. People make mistakes. Mistakes are fascinating in a character. I just think that a show should show a mistake as a mistake and I doubt Teen Wolf would do that because I have little faith in it.

...If Stiles uses Scott there shouldn't be a problem. Stile's dad likes Scott. Either you and I have very different interpretations of the Sheriff or you know something I don't. Granted, he may be freaked out and scared and maybe have an initial bad reaction but I honestly doubt he'll become a hunter or something and kill whoever Stiles outed. I really can't see that as a legitimate worry.

I dunno, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse with all this talk since you said you think he should be told too. I don't know. I feel like I'm completely overselling my view.
