I ... know? the book's pretty explicit that, by the end, Hannibal is cool with Clarice being semi-Mischa and semi-herself. I just don't know how you could possibly read Clarice's feelings on the matter given the state she's in, which is what confused me about the post above.

also, just checked and it was the sound of a crossbow that Hannibal established as "if you ever hear this, you're free to make your own choices" ... which would imply to me that she's still hypnotized by the end.

She's not "semi-Mischa". She flat out tells him that Mischa will have to live on in him.

And then seduces him.

Different anon, but I kind of read it as she subconsciously had feelings for him on a level that the drugs and hypnosis brought out, as he worked to break down her restraints and barriers to bring out hidden desires, evidenced especially in the scene where she tells Paul Krendler what an awful person she really thinks he is.

Not to mention Clarice's sanity really takes a beating throughout the novels. She continuously exercises poor judgement and reckless, almost downright suicidal behavior (especially when she goes to save Hannibal from the pigs. Realistically she should have not survived that experience, and in the novel she does nearly die from an overdose of tranquilizer) Add a big dose of loneliness and you've got a recipe for disaster.

but tl;dr Thomas Harris in my opinion purposefully left it in a VERY grey area so the reader could come up with their own interpretation.

I got the feeling she was drugged for a very short time. She'd already been having some fucked up feelings for him before then, it's why she didn't outright kill him when she was rescuing him from Scarface (can't remember his name right off). I don't think he'd keep her drugged well into their relationship as I get the feeling he'd find that distasteful. She decided to stay, all on her own in the end.
