The end of Jo's run as Three's companion, to me, is one of the saddest moments of Doctor Who ever, Classic or New. A lot of New Who moments like Rose and the Ponds don't even come close for me.

Sarah Jane leaving Four beats that one hands down, jsyk. And Four seemed more upset when Leela got a guy, IMO.

Sorry, yeah, Four's my Doctor, I'll shut up and go away now.... :-P

Not OP, but

While Four's my Doctor, too, Three's reaction to Jo leaving him felt like a punch in the gut, to me.

I know that she was a character of pure cardboard, but I was reduced to tears by Mel's leaving at the end of Dragonfire. The way the Doctor keeps trying to avoid actually showing just how suddenly bereft he is when she tries to say goodbye. Then he descends into that little lost monologue. It is heartbreaking.

I just listened to a new audio play with Mel and Six (with the original actors) ... And I *liked* Mel. She wasn't cardboard. I think the playwriter tried hard to make her resourceful and interesting.

Back in the Classic Who era she was. Then again there were a lot of problems with ColinB too. The audios that have been done since are leagues better though. It makes me wonder, just how much of what was going on was with the actors and how much was the way the Beeb made tv back in those days? We all know that the crew and writers were getting hammered every which way from Who's incredibly bitchy fanbase, the upper echelons of the BBC who hated the show, and by crew and bit part actors who were often given a Who job as punishment. That had to have an effect, of course both actors also have more experience now.

I completely agree. Jon really sells the scene with some extraordinary subtlety and tenderness, and Michael Briant's direction of those final moments just highlight his performance with a quiet bittersweetness that you would be hard-pressed to find in Doctor Who these days.

Katy also never gets enough credit for her acting in general- Jo has quite a distinct arc of growth, something that was not considered compulsory for Classic Who companions (not that she's the only one who gets one, to be sure!), and she has some of the best comedic timing of all the companions past and present.

So very much this. Are they teaching/telling the actors to be wannabe Brian Blesseds and chew every piece of visible scenery in every single minute of every single episode, or are they really seriously thinking that writing everything so OTT is NOT going to turn people off after it goes on and on and on and on and on without any let up?

Then again, Moffat being a soap opera/sitcom writer, he prolly thinks "This is what drama IS!" So.

When is the next showrunner going to show up, please and thank you? And do try and get someone who at least reads SOME science fiction (Books, you know, those paper things you can load three thousand of onto an ereader, so it's not like they've got any excuse not to at least TRY) before they start, is that really so much to ask, BBC?

Yeah. Yeah, it apparently is.

This isn't a thread about whining about New Who. Why are you ruining people's moods by inserting unrelated snivel-fests into a secret thread about Three and Jo's relationship? Whenever someone can't appreciate a great scene/character/era without tearing down another one, I will automatically assume you don't really appreciate that great thing at all and are so insecure about your opinions that you cannot comprehend of liking something without convincing yourself you're allowed to like it because this other thing you're comparing it to is crap.

Jo's goodbye to Three was a wonderful scene, and it would be wonderful regardless of how good/bad New Who was. I happen to also think it was probably better than a lot of more OTT New Who scenes, but there are also some New Who scenes were a lot better than similar Old Who scenes, and even if they weren't, I still wouldn't feel the need to compare them. It just takes time away from appreciating Jo's goodbye scene all on its own.

Seriously, how sad and petty are you?

Thank you for summing up why Jo is basically my favourite companion. ♥

This. And I agree with the OP... there's a reason why the Doctor was so crushed!
