Clearly, they have the wrong people mixing their drinks.

Actually, all alcohol tastes very similar to me. It has a very "alcohol" taste, if that makes sense. I've tried a lot of different types of alcohol and mainly have found that even in super fruity cover-up drinks I can still taste that medicinal alcohol taste. So yeah, it all tastes bad to me. And before anyone tries, yes I've had "good alcohol", not just shitty cheap stuff.

That being said, I totally recognize that it taste differently to everyone else and would never be all "Why are you drinking that it tastes like shit!?"

I'm not the OP, but I find all alcohol unpleasant because of the alcohol itself. I'm hypersensitive to taste so it always seems to hit me and it means that every alcoholic drink I've tried tastes really bitter. Sure, they all taste different, but they all have that bitterness to me so that the only alcoholic drink I like is a spiked milkshake because of all the sugar.

Having said that, I don't then say that everybody who likes alcohol is undeserving of my respect because what is this I don't even.

Some people are just really good at picking out the taste of alcohol from any drink. I've had beer, wine, vodka, gin, Kahlua even... the background tastes differ, but alcohol leaps out and punches my tongue with awfulness in nearly every drink I've had. I envy people whose taste buds don't obsess over alcohol, because being tipsy is fun and clearly it's not a chore getting there for most people the way it is with me.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I've tried several types of alcohol and it all tastes horrible to me. All I can taste is this horrible burning that makes me want to gag. So, I pretty much don't drink at all because of that. But, I certainly don't mind if other people drink.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
There was a time when people thought it was hilarious to pass me alcoholic drinks or candy that they thought the alcohol couldn't be tasted in, and yeah, it can and it all has the same underlying taste of ... alcohol.

I'm guessing it's like the infamous asparagus smell - some people register it, some people don't. I find it pretty awful regardless, except when mingled in a meal and certain cakes.

That said, if someone wants to drink some booze, why not? I sure as fuck eat and drink things that make other people wrinkle their noses.

The OP is obviously a complete teatotaller. If you haven't taken the time to acquire a taste for alcoholic drinks, they do taste terrible.

I say this as someone who has, at the most, only drunk two shots of alcoholic drink in my 30+ years of life. (One of them did actually taste nice, it was butterscotch rum.)

[personal profile] aylee 2013-07-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I actually can't stand alcoholic beverages because of the texture, not the taste. There's an underlying... something to alcohol that just irritates my mouth. It's not the taste, I've found some that taste GREAT (Bailey's Irish Cream is one, particularly with hazelnut), but I can't drink in more than tiny, tiiiiiiiiiiiiny little sips (i.e. enough to get just a little on the tip of my tongue to get the flavor), because the texture otherwise overwhelms everything. Even if there's only a small amount of alcohol in something, I can taste it. It's usually there in things that have alcohol cooked into them too, although it's much, MUCH less pronounced and I can deal.

Kombucha, a cousin of alcohol, has the same texture and just... bleeeuuuhhhh. Do not want.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
If you like Baileys, you should try carbomb cupcakes (Guinness cake, whiskey ganache and Bailey's frosting). They're rich and tasty with a bit of alcohol, but mostly just yummy flavor. And you probably won't have to worry too much about texture cause there's other things going on like chocolate explosions and such.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually mind this, but I am delighted someone else has pointed out that alcohol has a "texture" (I think "mouthfeel" might be more accurate wording to get people to understand this?). There's something kind of slick and oily feeling followed by a weird dry sensation about a lot of alcohols.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If I had to lose all respect for people who enjoyed tastes that make me gag, I couldn't respect all these crazy fruitcake eaters in my family.

I've heard people actually say this kind of shit (about actual people they know, not fandom stuff) so I wouldn't discount this as a troll automatically.

It's the "binge drinker" idea that puts it over the top for me.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-07-04 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
True. I mean it's not like everyone who drinks automatically binges/is an alcoholic. I'm assuming (? maybe not a good idea...) that OP knows this. They're either trolling, or they don't care that it's an exaggeration because they really hate it that damn much.

Same here. There's a world of difference between a glass of wine with dinner (which I'm guessing is what the image in the secret is), and doing shots of cheap tequila til you black out.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I drink socially but I've never even been drunk, let alone had enough to count as a binge. I just don't drink that much at a time or consume it fast enough. There have been times when I knew I should wait a while before driving, but that's it. Either OP has friends with problems, or he/she is exaggerating to feel self-righteous.

It also makes me think they need to meet more people. If the only people who drink alcohol are people who binge drink, then they're missing out on a significant part of the population.

Either that or the poster is incredibly young. Taste buds need to fully mature before they start thinking grown up things taste good.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
i don't get this.

why can't people not like the taste of alcohol? why do you have to find some reason like "they're too immature for grown up stuff" to degrade them with? it's insulting and makes you sound like a dipshit.

Your sense of taste DOES change as you age. Plus, acquired tastes exist; the first few times I tried beer I really didn't like it very much, but I acquired the taste and now I really like a good beer.

You're allowed to dislike what you dislike, but tastes can change over time.

LOL! I didn't say they were immature to like wine. I said your tastebuds haven't matured. Methinks the poster doth protest too much...

Personally, I can't stand alcohol either, but I do know the biological reason why. My mouth was damaged as a kid and my tongue was scarred. It won't 'mature' like other people's will. I will always like sweet stuff. I will always think vegetables taste awful. I will always despise coffee and tea. My mouth will never heal itself back to rights, let alone mature. There is something wrong with me. See me crying about it and whining that people are saying I'm immature? No, because that argument is stupid.

http://chemse.oxfordjournals.org/content/28/5/397.full

Last time I checked, blaming a damaged biological system on one's maturity is kind of like trying to bring pherenology back as a hard science.

Actually, this reminds me a lot of the coffee/tea arguments that have popped up at times. I have literally known people to say that, obviously, anybody who likes coffee (or tea, or whatever it is they don't like) just has no taste and so they will no longer respect that person because, obviously, they have bad taste.

Yeah, I don't even, either.
