That made the whole typical college shtick movie worth it, the ending.

Arg.

The colors in the secret camouflaged the spoiler alert for me. I guess I don't have to see the movie now fml...

...So, because you know something about the ending you can't enjoy watching? I...honestly do not get that mindset. [And, for the record, I'm not trying to be snarky.]

It takes all the mystery out of it. "Ohh what's gonna happen, how are they gonna get through this... oh right, they're not."

Eh, there actually are plenty of decent, well paying jobs that don't require a college degree - and usually in fields that aren't full to the brim because they also happen to be blue collar jobs - which tend to be looked down upon because of reasons.

Seriously though, OP, if you're willing to get certified in something like plumbing or as a electrician you can make a lot, even more if you go up to being a Master of that trade.

Eh.

They can be traps. It's a very specific non-transferable skill set, that you get trapped in if you find yourself bored of it after five or ten years, leaves you at risk of devaluation due to external influences, and has very little career progression outside setting up your own business.

Go for the degree, and then go into a trade just to help your options unless you're going to be big style in debt.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-05 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not arguing that - just pointing out that there are prefectly valid 'good' careers that don't need a degree..and, as far as pay does, at least my country there's actually a pretty big shortage of workers in these fields/people going into these fields. Plus min. wage is usually a good 2-3x actual min. wage here. But...that may just be where I live.

I was so pissed at the ending.
I would have loved to watch a movie about the two of them climbing the job ladder and worrying about their future and stuff instead of the usual college and "outcasts/nerds win in the end" tropes.

Also I wanted to see how Mike got together with his girlfriend for some reason. When that movie wasn't out yet I was dying to find out more about her. But no.

I enjoyed MU, but counting on Pixar to give a shit about a female character is apparently asking a lot :|

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
it's not unachievable, but you've got to be charismatic as fuck and make the right connections

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I won't blame the university system for its one-size-fits-all nature, that's a problem with standardization.

I hate the debt though.

Still, I think the worst part of this movie was the continuity. In Monsters Inc, Mike said that Sully's been jealous of his looks since the 4th grade. And then why did they have to beat the scream record when clearly they shattered it in this movie? I mean, they blew up a whole room full of scream canisters!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually read that the creators really tried to do a scene with Sully and Mike meeting in elementary school, but it wouldn't work. So they decided that "since fourth grade" is just a saying in the Monster World. (Though it would have been helped by someone using it as a phrase in MU.)

As for the scream record, you could say that they shattered the record for most screams obtained in one outing, but I'd think that the real scream record referred to was a lot more screams than that, built up over an entire career.

Regarding the scream record that's obviously what they're trying to accomplish in the first movie (all time screams built up over their entire career), but the canisters in the Scaring School hall do seem to denote that they also have records for most amount of scream energy gathered in one scare. That's what Hardscrabble seems to have won, anyway.

1) Pixar said they debated what to do about the line in the first movie a lot. In the end they decided to just pretend as if Mike was exaggerating because they really didn't feel they could tell the story they wanted to otherwise.

2) Because that didn't count. They broke an insane amount of rules, almost got caught by humans, caused a lot of destruction, and were expelled for it. While I'm sure it became sort of a legend at the school, there's no way that the powers that be were going to allow them to claim that record. Plus they DID break the record through scaring a ton of people at once, as opposed to just one kid like presumably the other records were.

That bugged me, too! I spent the last eleven years imagining them running around in elementary school together. Maybe this movie can count as John Lasseter's glorified fan fiction?

spoilers for Monsters University

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-07-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for the movie Monsters University, that prequel for Monsters Inc.

No seriously, the following description spoils the ending

[Picture is Mike and Sulley sharing a bunk bed in a college dormitory. Mike is a green spherical monster with a huge eye and a huge mouth in the center of his body, and thin arms and legs. Sulley is a bipedal monster with blue fur and purple dots, small brown horns and claws. Sulley has the top bunk and is smiling and laying on his back with his arms behind his head, while Mike is learning on an elbow in the lower bunk, glaring upwards at how the upper mattress is dipping into his space from Sulley's weight.]

I have resented the endless, one-size-fits-all American schooling system since I was in elementary school. I especially hate that every decent job now requires a college diploma -- more years off your life and a whole ton of debt on top.

Them getting expelled and then working their way up to the top is probably my favorite ending to a movie, ever. I'm just sad that it's basically an unachievable fairy tale for nowadays.

my uncle didnt even finish high school and he makes what like 6 figures?? these days

he sells cars

It's possible if you're determined enough. But you'll never get anywhere if you continue to see it as an "unachievable fairy tale" and don't even try.

You're holding yourself back far more than the American schooling system.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
this movie was fun but then I went home from the theater and realized all that scaring schooling would be for nothing in 10 years...

at least the guys from OK could probably become good comedians

"one size fits all american education system"? Let me laugh at you for a bit.

You mean, the system where you can pick and choose your classes in college? The system where you can change your major twice a year with no repercussions? the system where failing a class doesn't mean having to redo the entire year?

Oh you spoiled brat.

It's very, VERY expensive but the US education system is the most modular and most student-oriented int he world. You would not have actually graduated elementary school is most other countries, much less college.

Could you be any less of a condescending prick?

"You mean, the system where you can pick and choose your classes in college?"

If you happen to go to a large college and don't have really wonky requirements.

"The system where you can change your major twice a year with no repercussions?"

If your university has the major and all the classes you've already taken fit it properly. Personally, I had to drop out of the school I was going to.

"the system where failing a class doesn't mean having to redo the entire year?"

This is just flat out misinformation - unless you're going to a really sucky school, you need to pass to get the credits to graduate.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience in your country, but you're generalizing big time.

Except it totally is anon. A lot of greats took a round about way to the top.

And yeah, this is pretty much my favorite moral of any Pixar film. I went through almost the exact same thing Mike did, having a major that you thought you'd always wanted to be and realizing the hard way your talents lied elsewhere.
