Yeah! Samus Aran may have worn a bikini in some of the endings to 'Metroid', but she did it all in a huge ass suit of armor. And then Terra and Celes from FF6 too, they were hella awesome and didn't need sex appeal to do it.

Not to mention Lara Croft, who -regardless of what you think of her- paved the way for female leads in games when Nintendo SERIOUSLY dropped the ball with Samus. Even then, Crystal Dynamics really redeemed Lara from being a sex symbol to a character with an actual heart (and a cup size smaller too).

What do you mean by Nintendo dropping the ball?

The creator of Metroid died in a car wreck not long after Super Metroid was released, and the series was never as popular in Japan as it was in the US. Since there was no creator and no big fanbase, there was no major driving force for more games. Nintendo didn't drop anything, the series just wasn't a priority to them.
