What do you mean by Nintendo dropping the ball?

The creator of Metroid died in a car wreck not long after Super Metroid was released, and the series was never as popular in Japan as it was in the US. Since there was no creator and no big fanbase, there was no major driving force for more games. Nintendo didn't drop anything, the series just wasn't a priority to them.
