SPIES!

[personal profile] ginainthekingsroad 2013-07-08 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So around a year ago, my mom and I got the original Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy from netflix. What followed was a great succession of other espionage-themed shows winding up in our queue. I'm looking for more spy/deception thriller stuff etc to add that we might have missed. Subtitles are okay.

Things we've already gotten/in the queue:
Currently: The Glory Boys
Circles of Deceit
TTSS/Smiley's People
Sleepers
Wish Me Luck
Cambridge Spies (very disappointing)
Hopscotch
The Ipcress File
Glorious 39
Green for Danger

We only have netflix by mail, no streaming, so that's a consideration but not a requirement. Don't bother recc'ing Hitchcock we've got most of them already.

Spooks (MI5) and Strike Back (this is more of an action series).

Seconding Spooks. It's outrageously unrealistic, but the characters are gold.

Get Smart for an hilarious send-up of spy shows, for sure; Man from UNCLE is decent; Mission:Impossible is great, especially the first few seasons; and for a weird deconstruction of spies try The Prisoner (original series, have never seen the new one)
ginainthekingsroad: Olivia from Fringe, blueish corridor background, dutch angle (tilted) (Fringe- Olivia Dutch Angle)

Oh we're quite familiar with the Prisoner, long before this recent kick. It was one of the few series we owned on VHS. Mom watched the new one and wasn't impressed, I gave it a pass as I was in school then. I'm a little hesitant to get into long-running American series because we're on the cheapest one-disc-at-a-time plan and we don't sit down and watch 4+ episodes of something a day. My list is indeed mostly movies/miniseries/short British series.

My mom was a big fan of the original Man from UNCLE when it first aired when she was a kid, I think she might be reticent to rewatch it now and be disappointed.

The one thing she does wish we could find is Ian Holm in "Game Set Match", but there is no official dvd release because the author of the novels was very unhappy with the tv adaptations. There is a "fan remaster" dvd I found online somewhere, knit together from people's taped-off-tv VHS tapes from the original airings. But the website looked kiiinda sketchy so I passed.

I've watched MfU as an adult, and while the pacing is kinda wonky in a 60s way, and the sfx are of course deeply silly, I still quite liked it! You can at least give it a go ^^

Geena Davis did a spy movie that I found really interesting back in the...late '80s? Early 90's? The Long Kiss Goodnight. Granted, I haven't seen it since then, but I remember liking it a lot.

I don't really have a clue what Netflix is, and spy movies are not my forte, but The Double with Richard Gere and Topher Grace was a pretty good watch. The other John Le Carré adaptations also could worth a try: The Tailor of Panama; The Russia House; A Perfect Spy (a miniseries).(I’ve only seen The Constant Gardener by him, and it’s definitely not a spy movie, but oh boy, do I love that film.) Oh, and I know that Michael Caine played a certain spy several times. (My google-fu tells me it’s this character: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Palmer I don’t know the movies or the books, but it’s… Michael Caine!)

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, movie and book are both very good.
