Cheap glasses recommendation!

[personal profile] vethica 2013-07-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
For everyone in this thread bemoaning the dearth of cheap glasses, may I suggest Zenni Optical? I've never bought from them myself, but a friend of mine swears by them, and they have glasses as cheap as $7. c:

I got frames there once, very cheap (4 bucks) and they were good quality. Can't do my 'script there, though.

Seconding Zenni! Prescription lenses in lovely purple metal frames cost me a total of about $30, including shipping. If you have coke-bottle lenses, it'll be a bit more (since you'll want to go with the more expensive, lighter-weight lenses), but they have some really nice frames for cheap. No problems with mine; I've had a few pairs now and they've all lasted comfortably more than a year.

They also do tinted lenses and the like, so it's a fantastic source for costume and sunglasses - you can get cosplay glasses in your prescription, or with fake lenses (if you don't need glasses/are wearing prescription contacts).

Thank you! I will definitely be trying them in the future when the piece of tacky plastic on my face inevitably breaks.

I'll second the recomendation for zenni. I'm very nearsighted (well, in the -5 range anyway) so I do have to wear them all day, every day. Before I bought online, one pair cost several hundred and the same goddamn thing was on my face 24/7 and, no matter how much you like a frame when you pick it out, you start to HATE it when it's always, always, always, always on your face.

First time I tried zenni, I bought 7 pairs for less than I'd paid for my last pair of "official" (= done at my opticians) glasses.

And it's awesome.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this has changed my life and my outlook. being able to change what I look like is great, without having to sacrifice on vision or comfort. (Yeah, I can do a heavy, lacy "fashion" frame for a night out, but there is no way I'd EVER have chosen that one for my "one pair you must wear for two years all the time" pair)

Since then, my prescription has plateaued (thank GOD!), so I've started a bit of a collection. It's not too expensive; I've come to think of getting a new pair the way I think of getting a new pair of shoes or a nice top, since they're now in the same price-range. So yeah, now I've a few different colors, shapes, styles, and they feel more like "oh, this thing I wear to help me see" and less like "this damn thing I can't function without".
