I will just ignore the actual wording of this secret and just go ahead with one of my all time favourite rants, if that is okay with you guys?

... Okay, here goes:

Words can not describe how much it annoys me that people just buy glasses without needing them as an fashion accessory, or not exactly that part of it, but the fucking ignorant part where they think that I can just buy new ones whenever I feel like it because "you can get like 2 pairs for 30 bucks, it is not that expensive" and I am just sitting there going yeah I can buy a pair glasses for 30 bucks, but they will not work on me, my glasses or more correctly the glass in them cost 250€ each, I can't just buy a new pair whenever... But you can't go around explaining that to everyone.

Not to mention how much it annoys me that I spent the first 15 years of my "glasses wearing" life being ashamed of my glasses, and now suddenly it is fashionable? I am happy glasses have somehow become cool, but seriously! I was mocked by the people whom now use fake glasses because it is fashion as a kid.

Okay I will stop now, before I go into more glasses rants, because I got several on the top of the list is "you can't just fucking take my glasses of my face! They are expensive and not to mention I need them to see". And whenever people try them on they go "Oh My how do you see through that?" or "wow you do have bad eyesight!", like I have worn glasses since I was 4 just for fun...

...I have a lot of feelings centred around glasses, sorry about that... Here have a gif. of kittens kissing:

I hear you.

I'm wearing cracked lenses right now because I can't afford a new pair. It must be nice for people who can get 2 pair for $30.

I wish I didn't need glasses.

kitties are cute!

Are you US? I've had great luck with zennioptical.com - $50 for glasses w/ lenses!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Who the heck gets glasses so cheap? I want to move to there. :P

I was just talking about this with a friend because I've noticed that in the past few years glasses have become more stylish, and the styles change a lot. And I thought "who the heck can afford new glasses all the time just to keep up with trends?" because seriously, they are expensive. And where I live your prescription only lasts a year, so if you want new glasses you not only have to pay for the glasses but for the Dr's appointment as well, even if your damn prescription hasn't changed in ten years. Ugh. Eyes.

If I am ever remotely rich the first thing I'm going to do is get that eye surgery that fixes your vision. I hate being so blind.

They're that cheap because they're cheap frames with cheap plastic (or no) lenses.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Glasses without lenses are not glasses to me. If they don't have lenses I can't see!

I don't know what a € is since none of my search engines turned up anything, but the pair of glasses I'm wearing now cost almost $300, which is half a month's salary for me. Unfortunately, it's not something I can go without.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
€ is the euro sign and 250 euros would be about 320 dollars.

Thank you!

Ohmigod you are serious, I thought you were joking. I'm not even from Europe.

W O W

How have you never seen a euro sign before? I hope you're a sheltered tween or something.

My computer's broken, and the screen on my phone's pretty small; I thought it was a bass clef but we were talking about money so I had no idea.

Rant is totally fine.

I don't think I've ever had a personal annoyance in life with glasses for fashion people, probably because I've always been in the music sector of things where "fashion" doesn't tend to go with "band geek" and the friends I knew who wore them, wore them because they needed them just like me. (In fact we used to do this things where we'd get like seven different people's glasses and stack them one on top of the other and then look through all them together for a split-second before we were just like "OH GOD NO.")

But I do get rather annoyed with my mom. She's wears reading glasses, which are about $15 for a 3 pack at your average corner drugstore, and then she'll proceed to LOSE ALL OF THEM over the course of a single month. And then she judges me when I lose a pair of mine, like, once every two years.

As far as prices go, have you tried looking around for special time of the year super bonus sales? Normally my glasses are in the $100-$150 range (I always go with the cheapest frames available), but once I played my cards right and got two pairs + an eye exam for about $80. It was amazing.

Cheap glasses recommendation!

For everyone in this thread bemoaning the dearth of cheap glasses, may I suggest Zenni Optical? I've never bought from them myself, but a friend of mine swears by them, and they have glasses as cheap as $7. c:

I got frames there once, very cheap (4 bucks) and they were good quality. Can't do my 'script there, though.

Seconding Zenni! Prescription lenses in lovely purple metal frames cost me a total of about $30, including shipping. If you have coke-bottle lenses, it'll be a bit more (since you'll want to go with the more expensive, lighter-weight lenses), but they have some really nice frames for cheap. No problems with mine; I've had a few pairs now and they've all lasted comfortably more than a year.

They also do tinted lenses and the like, so it's a fantastic source for costume and sunglasses - you can get cosplay glasses in your prescription, or with fake lenses (if you don't need glasses/are wearing prescription contacts).

Thank you! I will definitely be trying them in the future when the piece of tacky plastic on my face inevitably breaks.

I'll second the recomendation for zenni. I'm very nearsighted (well, in the -5 range anyway) so I do have to wear them all day, every day. Before I bought online, one pair cost several hundred and the same goddamn thing was on my face 24/7 and, no matter how much you like a frame when you pick it out, you start to HATE it when it's always, always, always, always on your face.

First time I tried zenni, I bought 7 pairs for less than I'd paid for my last pair of "official" (= done at my opticians) glasses.

And it's awesome.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this has changed my life and my outlook. being able to change what I look like is great, without having to sacrifice on vision or comfort. (Yeah, I can do a heavy, lacy "fashion" frame for a night out, but there is no way I'd EVER have chosen that one for my "one pair you must wear for two years all the time" pair)

Since then, my prescription has plateaued (thank GOD!), so I've started a bit of a collection. It's not too expensive; I've come to think of getting a new pair the way I think of getting a new pair of shoes or a nice top, since they're now in the same price-range. So yeah, now I've a few different colors, shapes, styles, and they feel more like "oh, this thing I wear to help me see" and less like "this damn thing I can't function without".

THIS! I have a horrible astigmatism, my friggin' glasses are *expensive*, even when i got with a super-cheap frame.

I'm currently wearing glasses that are three years old because i can't afford to replace them. Fucking sucks.
