(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)But appropriation? Gurl please, nerd culture did not fucking INVENT glasses NOR are they such a huge important staple that wearing them outside of that culture is anywhere close to offensive ever.

... Okay, here goes:
Words can not describe how much it annoys me that people just buy glasses without needing them as an fashion accessory, or not exactly that part of it, but the fucking ignorant part where they think that I can just buy new ones whenever I feel like it because "you can get like 2 pairs for 30 bucks, it is not that expensive" and I am just sitting there going yeah I can buy a pair glasses for 30 bucks, but they will not work on me, my glasses or more correctly the glass in them cost 250€ each, I can't just buy a new pair whenever... But you can't go around explaining that to everyone.
Not to mention how much it annoys me that I spent the first 15 years of my "glasses wearing" life being ashamed of my glasses, and now suddenly it is fashionable? I am happy glasses have somehow become cool, but seriously! I was mocked by the people whom now use fake glasses because it is fashion as a kid.
Okay I will stop now, before I go into more glasses rants, because I got several on the top of the list is "you can't just fucking take my glasses of my face! They are expensive and not to mention I need them to see". And whenever people try them on they go "Oh My how do you see through that?" or "wow you do have bad eyesight!", like I have worn glasses since I was 4 just for fun...
...I have a lot of feelings centred around glasses, sorry about that... Here have a gif. of kittens kissing:

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)I'm wearing cracked lenses right now because I can't afford a new pair. It must be nice for people who can get 2 pair for $30.
I wish I didn't need glasses.
kitties are cute!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)I was just talking about this with a friend because I've noticed that in the past few years glasses have become more stylish, and the styles change a lot. And I thought "who the heck can afford new glasses all the time just to keep up with trends?" because seriously, they are expensive. And where I live your prescription only lasts a year, so if you want new glasses you not only have to pay for the glasses but for the Dr's appointment as well, even if your damn prescription hasn't changed in ten years. Ugh. Eyes.
If I am ever remotely rich the first thing I'm going to do is get that eye surgery that fixes your vision. I hate being so blind.

I don't think I've ever had a personal annoyance in life with glasses for fashion people, probably because I've always been in the music sector of things where "fashion" doesn't tend to go with "band geek" and the friends I knew who wore them, wore them because they needed them just like me. (In fact we used to do this things where we'd get like seven different people's glasses and stack them one on top of the other and then look through all them together for a split-second before we were just like "OH GOD NO.")
But I do get rather annoyed with my mom. She's wears reading glasses, which are about $15 for a 3 pack at your average corner drugstore, and then she'll proceed to LOSE ALL OF THEM over the course of a single month. And then she judges me when I lose a pair of mine, like, once every two years.
As far as prices go, have you tried looking around for special time of the year super bonus sales? Normally my glasses are in the $100-$150 range (I always go with the cheapest frames available), but once I played my cards right and got two pairs + an eye exam for about $80. It was amazing.
Cheap glasses recommendation!

Why isn't it appropriation when people who don't need them wear glasses?

Really, look at it this way people -- wouldn't it be a dick move if people went around in a wheelchair or with crutches or whatever just because they thought it looked cool? Glasses are only a fashion accessory because they kind of NEED to be if they're going to be on my fucking face all day long every day in order for me to even see
Not going to say it's "appropriation" but yeah, it does make you look like a fucking asshole, sorry. If you want to wear something on your face wear a pair of sunglasses or something geez

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 01:12 am (UTC)(link)What I really don't understand, though, is why anyone in their right mind would choose to spend money on some of the clunky, thick-rimmed, FUCKING UGLY "birth control" glasses that are passing for fashionable nowadays, whether they need vision correction or not!

It's not appropriation. At all.
For me it's a visual aid, for my utterly blind person it's an identifyer for other people, for some glasses are workwear and yes, for some people, it's fashion.
This is not bad. It helps bring prices down (last seasons frames if it's available for you! They can be free, then you're only paying for lenses. If you're lucky, country/state/town/store dependant)
Certainly not appropriation(?!), all they're doing is wearing some glasses. This is not inconveniencing or harming you. You could go on a similar rant about people who wear gloves for a purpose as opposed to people who wear it for fashion

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 04:54 am (UTC)(link)Yay for picking and choosing your extremist views on ~activism~!1!! (I wish I could still believe in my own attempts at making that look hyperbolic. An SJ-conscious friend of mine used to swear by Lady Gaga as her activist pop idol for years and years, and then one day she put on a mermaid costume with a closed tail during a performance and rolled herself onto the stage in a wheelchair, or something. And just like that, the love was over and Lady Gaga had joined the ranks of the ablist and appropriating enemy. ffs)
