The only thing keeping from really liking Jim Butcher's books is Harry Fucking Dresden. I like the universe, I like the supporting characters, but Harry himself just makes me want to scream. And since we stay in his head for the whole book, it ends up becoming a chore by the end. v_v As a result, I've only finished two of the Dresden books.

So why do you read them? Is the plot super good> Or is it loyalty to the author?

The plots are pretty generic, really. They'd generally be fun little popcorn books, if I didn't spend half the time cursing Harry for being a sexist and an idiot.

I like the universe, I like the other characters, a large number of my friends have read them, and the GM of my gaming group has partially based the magic system in the universe we play in on the one in the Dresden books.

So, between there being a bunch of stuff I do like, and a few real-world things making me feel obligated...I put up with Harry (though I am currently taking a break from pushing through them to read China Mieville's Bas-Lag books).

YANA but at least Butcher (through Harry) admits (in the later books anyway) that he's nuts for going all Imma Let You Finish But Chivalry is Not Dead and Imma Save U Cause U a Gurl on any female character in any kind of distress.

I grant you that Harry is completely unapologetic about the attitude, but, eh. I personally hate the uber-repetitive character descriptions in Every. Single. Book. WAY more than Harry's attitude. JMO.

But we might have forgotten that "Gentleman" Johnny Marcone has eyes the colour of faded dollar bills! Or that Thomas is so OMGSEXY!

I always tell people that putting up with Harry gets easier once he has enough recurring characters to balance out the more insufferable aspects to him. The early books are the hardest, because Murphy is still on the outskirts and there's no Molly or Thomas or Sasha or Butters (fucking love Butters).

But the latest couple of entries to the series have started a downward slope for me and I think I'm losing my high tolerance.
