Of the nerd hobbies, it's always seemed to have one of the more equal gender ratios.

Except it's literally the most "autistic obsessive manchild nerd virgin" thing in existence. it's the modern equivilent of obsessed star trek fans.

Hm, I find that a lot of fandom for TV and Movies tend to have an equal gender ratios. And the comic book fandom seems to be more equal these days as well.

...where is this question even going? Women like anime because they do, same as any other genre. As far as fanbases go, anime is a lot more accessible though, which might be a partial reason for the discrepancy you're seeing.

Like every other kind of media, anime is actually a pretty diverse genre. It's like you're asking "Why do women like movies?"

Serious question, though, OP: ...what all do you think "anime" is? Because it's not a genre - it's a media form.

I'm gonna try and answer this question without being a cunt, which is apparently harder than it seems based on some of the replies.

People on the internet tend to be into geek culture, anime is a subgroup of geek culture, so a lot of places online tend to be devoted to anime.

Also a lot of places online seem to be heavily weighted towards one gender or another, like here, for example, I would say is a feminine community. 4chan, a masculine community. not meaning for this to sound as a hard and fast rule, just a general feeling.

Furthermore it is not out of the ordinary for fanfic communities (Yet another subgroup of geek culture, one that intersects with other groups such as anime) tend to be weighted towards more women than men.

Combine the above factors and it would appear that more women are into anime than men, but really, it's just a false reading based on a limited cross section.

Why do men like anime? Why do women like video games? Why do men like My Little Pony? Why do the Japanese like (insert long list here)? Why do I like protagonists with a psychotic side that gets off on killing people?

We could sit around and ask these questions allllllll day, but does any of it even matter?
