If you can, try and find a class with a lot of middle age and up people in it - that's what I did and it was the most comfortable class ever.

Seconded! I've noticed that people tend to view the whole exercise thing as less of a "who is fittest" contest as they get older. From my experience, classes geared towards middle-aged students or older also are likely to have instructors that know how to accommodate various abilities. If you have a local community education group, that's a good place to find senior-geared classes.
