Like everyone's told you, OP, people (generally) don't say that because "not switching is unrealistic", rather because they're sick of two things:

1) Character A being deemed a bottom (or top) because he has specific traits that in real life have nothing to do with someone's sexual preferences (height, age, hair colour, etc.)

2) Character A, having been deemed a bottom (or top), having his canon character traits mangled so that he better fits into stereotypes of bottoms (or tops)

These things are unrealistic and out of character, not someone deciding they only like one position in the bedroom.

Hahahahahah I must admit that I am so tired of that shit that said character mangling is an instant back button. I realize that it's just porn and that everyone has preferences, but if in, say, a doujinshi, an artist literally alters the way a character looks to make him better fit his bedroom position (e.g. makes muscular bottom svelte or a tall bottom short, or the opposite for a top) it's a 100% will not buy or read. I prefer switching not only because it's hot, but because in my experience it makes that the author/artist is orders of magnitude less likely to perform said character mangling to shoehorn them into particular bedroom roles. Which makes not only for better porn, but a better story, too.

Sometimes the artist is crazy enough to change the appearance of a character solely during the sex scenes. That always turns me off faster than ... I don't know. It's just a very strong NO THX for me.

Ahahahah that is just awful. That would kill the ladyboner pretty fast for me, too.

There's one artist in my fandom who reverses the heights of a pairing where one guy is like 6'3" and the other is like 5'8". As in, there's no real room for interpretation here with respect to their heights. Except the short guy is older and manlier and protective, so he usually tops (including in this fangirl's art). When asked why, said artist replied that his height doesn't "fit" his personality.

Son, whaaaaaatttt? Short men can't be manly? Or short men can't fuck another guy's ass? Either way, I cannot run away from her shit fast enough.

Eugh, I feel your pain, I'd be running too. Sadly that still seems to be common in a lot of fandoms -- make one smaller, give him bigger eyes etc. and vice versa.

I love big-eyed, smaller, "prettier" guys in fiction. :) I love them to look vulnerable and sweet and sometimes get a little bit bitchy. But I like to not have those traits be about a certain sexual position, just part of who they are. I prefer not to have certain traits or physical appearances determine sexual stuff, and I pretty much stopped reading fan fiction because of this.
