I always feel weird during Father's Day on Tumblr because it seems like everyone had a horrible father and I am just sitting here with my "My Dad Was Awesome" balloon. Maybe I should just start pretending my dad was an asshole...hm.

My dad's awesome.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
this secret kind of annoyed me, but this comment reminded me of something that corresponded with it. A few people on Father's Day saying shit like 'be respectful, some people have awful/absent/dead fathers!!!' Like... what am I supposed to do, pretend I don't have a dad?! It's not like people were being messaged with stuff like 'happy Father's day, wait you don't have one lololol', it was just... people celebrating their dads. It sucks that not having one makes you sad, but what are you expecting?!

So that was silly. Though it was Tumblr, so...

God I saw that post too. And I am like, I doubt my post saying "Happy Father's Day!!!" was going to be a bigger remainder than the dozens of commercials leading up to Father's Day + the segments/shows/articles.

But don't you know people on Tumblr. live in a bubble where nothing should ever, ever be upsetting to anyone ever.

Guess I will check my dad privilege.

FYI I totally checked to see if Tumblr had a dad privilege tag. Thankfully it does not..........yet.

Aww, we should make that happen!

I tried to find a fitting gif. in my bookmarks, I kinda succeeded?

Don't tempt me!

Oh why not?

That does not fit at all, I just wanted someone to look up at the pretty man, and I found another pretty man to do it for me! And we can never have too much prettiness right?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think that mostly stems from the irritating Father's Day assumptions that everyone has a dad, and everyone wants to celebrate them.

And some don't have dads even, like my son, he has two mums.

Just like the assumption that everyone celebrates Christmas, 4th of July or Thanksgiving?

What some people seem to forget is that no one is forcing you to celebrate anything and heck even fathers and mothers day is not celebrated on the same day all over the world.

I am sure your son has two awesome mothers whom he will celebrate Mothers Day with, and that the fact that people celebrated Fathers day will not ruin that for you? Just like people celebrating 4th of July did not ruin my countries Independence day for me...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Thank you.

"... no one is forcing you to celebrate anything ..."

I wish I could tattoo this on the forehead of all the weirdos who were taking me to task for saying "Happy Holidays" last December.
As if I could know in advance who's Jewish, Muslim, Christian, or atheist just by looking at them. Agh. I must be a glutton for punishment. I guess this atheist will not be duct taping their mouth shut next winter, thankyouverymuch, dammit.

My kid doesn't have a father and Father's Day never bothers us. We never feel pressured by anyone celebrating Father's Day.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wow ... people are weird ... i don't even know how i can find it in me to be surprised anymore.

In my opinion it is more disrespectful to NOT acknowledge the awesome dads of the world, cause god knows we need more of them (we just need more awesome people in general).

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
it wasn't even fathers day in my country but that confused me?! Because okay, you don't have a dad. i'm still gonna go wish mine a happy fathers day, buy a present and mention i love him. If you get offended by that, well, fuck off

Then you may have a shoddily made balloon I just made.

Same. My dad's a bit strict, but it's because of him that I could go to all the countries that I wanted to go, including pre-clusterfuck Syria (special mention because we all had a good time with everyone there).

I wonder if good dads are in the minority there.

Well, I was raised by a single father (I had a sort of dead beat mom that lived across the country, I saw once a year, and never paid her child support).

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome single fathers represent *high five* My mom died when I was two and I'm gonna celebrate the fuck out of father's day if I want to, because my dad deserves it. Ya'll get your mother's days, I get my father's day.

I have an awesome father; he and my mom have been married for 40+ years now, and they're still very happy. And while my mom has (mostly unintentionally) passed on some very depressing and disempowering messages that she was taught as a young girl, my father has always been the one encouraging me to work hard for the things I want most. I guess I must have happy family privilege.

HA, no. My dad was freaking awesome and i'll brag about him to anybody that asks. Don't even. You have no reason to be 'ashamed' of a good parent.
cloud_riven: Bill from Pokemon side-eying to the left! Judging you! (*animu sweatdrop*)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2013-07-19 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Is that what happens? I avoid happy family topics because I assumed it was full of people appreciating their parents or something, and all that would just depress me. Sad & jelly here. Blueberry jelly beans.

Now I want to avoid them because of weird guilt mongering going on. It's a pretty dumb thing to make people feel bad for essentially counting their blessings.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
My Dad is awesome too. I just don't say anything about it unless someone asks me directly.
