You just reminded me of that secret where the OP said that Holmes should have been played by Lucy Lawless in Elementary, and now I want all my favourite books to get movie adaptations starring Lucy Liu and Lucy Lawless.

Even the books with male protagonists. They can wear fake moustaches!

I think it works the opposite way - people pick suitable actors for their favorite characters. The characters being the thing they love and have a pretty clear idea about (and imagine them to look a certain way) - which makes fancasting a non-white character as white a bit disturbing.
