They probably didn't tell you because the VA is, mostly, pretty badly run so there's no guarantee the people you were talking to at that time even knew that.

It really is. They went about three months without paying my housing allowance because no one could figure out that I had the remainder of my father's hours transferred.

*that had a 50/50 chance of making someone flip out violently because they flat out couldn't afford better...and that's not touching the stuff I'd seen/heard when I was interning at a VA hospital.
