Half-white? Uhhhh no, his mother is mentioned as having dark skin, and he's asked a few times in the narrative if he has First Nations (Native) ancestry, so I'm pretty sure neither of those could be considered "white." (I.e., European.)

.....Unless you are the F!S SJW who thinks Spanish and Middle Eastern people are white....

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'm pretty certain that anon is referring to his father.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
But what's to say that [spoiler] couldn't appear as a black guy? (Other than centuries of mythological tradition, of course.)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of this subthread

Yes! Thank you! I am reasonably certain that sure gods, fictional or otherwise, can appear as whatever they want. People. Animals. Etcetera. Skin colour is the least relevant thing, because gods don't have any.

/let me tell you how much I hate white religious icons, F!S

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Wednesday appeared as white the entire time the narrative was in the present, and Shadow recognized him in the flashback without noting he had changed race or anything. So while he absolutely could choose to appear as black or native or something else, I don't think he did.

...because you think gods are white...

Why don't you try thinking about that again. I'll wait. :-) (Tongue is in cheek here, in case you were wondering.)

I may be misremembering, but I don't recall it being stated point-blank in the book that Odin was Shadow's father...at least not in a biological sense. Allegorical, maybe? It's been about ten years since I read the book however, and my memory is not what it used to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Well, this particular god...

And yes, it's heavily implied that he slept with Shadow's mother.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Hmmm. Maybe. But I always had the distinct impression Shadow was dark-skinned like his mother. Since, as I state above, gods don't have a skin colour per se. That being the point of being a divine being.

I do admit that I could very well be completely alone and thoroughly insane in holding this theory however.

Shadow outright acknowledges Odin as his Father in that final speech, so less implied and more certain.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Gods are usually envisioned in the image of the culture that creates them. The ENTIRE point of American Gods is that gods are dependent in the people who believe in them-- part of which would be how they envision them to be. If not, then that's some shoddy-ass worldbuilding.

Also, you're giving people here carte-blanche to argue Anansis' sons can be white, if your logic is "well gods can look however ethnicity they want!"

What? No. We know he's at least half-white because we know that his father is from northern Europe. Specifically, he is the Norse god Odin. So, I mean, it's hard for me to see how he wouldn't be at least half-white, if his mother is non-white and his father is white

Also, are Spanish people not white?

I'm seriously so confused by your post

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Sorry for the confusion...there was an SJW on a Star Trek secret awhile back, trying to make the case that Ricardo Montalban was white. That's what I was thinking of.

As for the rest of your argument, I cover it in my posts above. Odin, fictional, allegorical, even if you think Odin lives, Odin is not white, either. Odin (in-universe anyway) is a divine being. Ergo, no skin colour.

Now, my reasoning could very well be completely off-the-wall here, but that's just how I see it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So would you be okay with someone casting a white dude to play Fat Charlie from Anansi Boys, on the ground that even though Mr Nancy is a black god from the Caribbean, his children could be any race?

Seriously, though, I think that's fine to say that Odin and Odin's kids could be any skin color, but I also think it's a fairly reasonable and intuitive thing to assume that because he's a Norse god, that he's going to appear Norse (in the same way that the Egyptian gods are probably going to appear Egyptian and Mr Nancy is going to appear African) and that his kids are mostly going to take that trait on from him. I think you can definitely justify all kinds of other things but I don't think that's a harmful or unreasonable default assumption? I guess? Is my point here?

Not that Anon but a very confused Spanish anon. Montalban parents were born in Spain and would be considered white, so how can he be considered not white?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
na

Spanish people as in "people from Spain" are Caucasians.
It's ridiculous to imply they should be considered PoC just because other Spanish speaking people (Mexicans) get racist shit in the US.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I think you replied to the wrong person, anon you're responding to was confused because the original one said Spanish people were PoC

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
... Moorish Spain?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
hispanic people can be both white and poc. also, caucasian is not a blanket term for white.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
wut?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Zimmerman is half Hispanic, someone called him a white Hispanic. Guess the President is a white African American. I can't wait till we are all completely mixed as a human race and this stupid shit can stop. Although we'll probably find something else to fuss about.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Not the anon from the above but.....Spanish people are white.

(Yes, there are non-white spanish people just like there are non-white british people, but Spanish people are in general white. You idiot.) Seriously hove you seen Spaniards?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Chiming in with everyone else...Spanish people are white. Or at least they can be (obviously not all Spanish people are).
